BM, University of Oregon, Music Education
I graduated University of Oregon in 2004, Go Ducks! Since my graduation I have worked in the school systems as a music teacher, algebra/geometry tutor and a paraeducator to students with disabilities. Starting in 2004 when I lived in Tucson for five years, I also taught City of Tucson group piano and guitar group lessons in recreation centers along with being a school music teacher.I have taught privately since 2000 and have had a wide variety of students, ones that ranges from a four year old boy on the piano to a sixty five year old gentleman who played a guitar box. I specialize in teaching very young children to adult beginners.I have taught a Music through Movement class for ages three to six years old, it was so much fun! Who doesn't like to dance in a circle? When you take one on one lessons with me, we work on building your music fundamentals in a well rounded way so that you may easily segway into any other instrument you may want to play, giving you a strong music fundamental base to build on. I incorporate your musical interests into your curriculum, focusing on music theory, technique and expression. As a piano player I have played weddings, done accompaniment work for individual musicians and high school musicals and once even played the piano during Holy High Days for a Jewish Temple!
My teaching experiencess date back to my college days. Along with the piano I also played the French Horn, Saxophone, Marimba and sang in voice studio. Those experiences allowed me to be in marching bands, symphonic bands, wind ensemble, choir, vocal jazz and accompany other musicians on the piano. I'd say that in my second year in the University of Oregon marching band when I auditioned for the pit and was chosen to play the marimba I was soooo excited! I was able to learn and play four mallet percussion. My marimba set up had crash and splash cymbals, a cow bell (yes a cow bell, the world needs more cow bell, LOL), a brake drum, a djembe and a small set of musical wind chimes all attached to a frame that surrounded the entire three octave marimba. We'd travel with the football team and that year we went to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Go Ducks! It was the only year I didn't march around with a feather on my head, LOL. These experiences with all the various instruments I have studied allows me to see piano differently. I am classically trained on the piano but I believe music is for everyone and it shouldn't be taken so seriously. The genuine love and study of music should be a positive experience. Music is in so much of who our identity is. I dedicate myself to providing a committed and fun curiculum, which can empower students, develop endless skills and build confidence.
I believe in teaching music theory as well as technic and expression, no matter how young the student is. I believe the piano is a wonderful springboard to learning and exploring other instruments. For piano the student will study out of the theory and lesson books. Other types of finger excersizes and supplemental music will be used, there is a ton of free music online! I may also use other aides to teach the student such as flashcards, musical games, note finders, and computer games and sites. For the guitar I typically use Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method but then I also use lots of music found online free. I think it's important that music is fun and that each student's curriculum is balanced with their own interests.
My teaching style is sensitive to the students' needs. I embrace the idea every student learns differently, playing to the student's strengths without coddling their weaknesses. I focus on clear and reachable expectations.I emphasize efficient practicing through fundamental strategies. You are how you practice.
