I started music when I was in fourth grade taking up the saxophone the clarinet in sixth grade the flute in eighth grade and thebassoon ninth grade.
I attended Manhattan school of music from 1972 78graduated with a bachelors of music degree in orchestra performance I attended Kane College of New Jersey for musical education studies j I currently play with the Delaware County Symphony the rose tree Pops Orchestra various suburban Philadelphia Orchestra is and also perform club dates on saxophone and flute with local club date groups including Chatterband ,while in New York I recorded on commercials for Dodge Chrysler Macy’s and other companies both TV and radio
My teaching experience started in 1976 when my teacher had passed away and I inherited his students teaching at Major music school in Irvington New Jersey teaching saxophone clarinet and flute I remain there for approximately 20 years When i relocated to central New Jersey where I was a teacher in the Franklin Township Edison South Brunswick and North Brunswick school system also doing private studio teaching And teaching at students homes and was also offering bassoon an oboe to my students I generally use if the student is in a school program what they are using working on their band music and then supplementing their lessons with appropriate solo material and technical material and I’m able to teach everything from jazz improvisation to orchestral playing and beginning to intermediate Oboe With my extensive performance and teaching experience I welcome the opportunity to expand to new students
Woodwind methods generally on saxophone clarinet flute beginners I will start with the rubank method supplemented by I will personally right in also using current popular tunes to supplement and hold interest I also try to concentrate On good tone production as well as technique On introducing swing jazz type performance are usually use the Charles Colin Bugs bower rhythm method series consisting of jazz phrasing books one and two and later if the student has advanced enough to the bugs power bop duet series also using pre-recorded tracks from the Jaime Aebersold series and various background tracks we Can download and use to practice pop and jazz
My teaching style can vary with each student each student has a different level of learning accessibility time restraints etc. One of the most important things I try to teach is the student to be his own teacher and whenever practicing whether it be 15 or 20 minutes when they are done with that practice session they have accomplished something some sort of improvement I have studied with teachers from the New York Philharmonic the metropolitan opera and the New York City ballet Orchestra they have all taught me and I pass on to the student to break down whatever they were playing and approach it in a patient manner by repeating and eventually getting their end result Whether it’s a few notes in a piece or a whole solo or exercise
