Master Degree: Arizona State University, Bachelor Degree: Arizona State University
I am an educator and guitarist based out of Flagstaff, Arizona. I hold both a Master of Music and a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance from Arizona State University. I teach many styles of music including classical, rock, blues, jazz, pop, country, and folk and welcome students of all levels and backgrounds. As an educator, I understand that every student has unique goals and learning styles and I tailor lessons to help students achieve these goals while also cultivating important music fundamentals.
I have over a decade of professional teaching experience including college-level private lessons, class guitar, music theory, and music history courses. Additionally, I have taught specialized class guitar programs and private guitar lessons in both public high school and public elementary school settings. As a performer, I have over twenty years of experience - recent venues include the Orpheum Theater (Phoenix, AZ), the Herberger Theater (Phoenix, AZ), the Musical Instrument Museum (Phoenix, AZ), the Tempe Center for the Arts (Tempe, AZ), and the Coconino Center for the Arts (Flagstaff, AZ).
My teaching methods are dependent upon the goals of the individual student; I implement a variety of different method books, including Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, Berklee Press, Shearer Method, and Parkening Method. For students desiring to learn classical, I use the studies of Sor, Carcassi, Aguado, Sagreras, as well as carefully selected repertoire. For students who desire to learn more contemporary styles, tablature and chords are used to teach different songs and techniques that the student may be learning.
Every student has unique learning styles and musical goals and, rather than have a 'one-size-fits-all' approach to teaching, I always strive to design my lesson curriculum to fit the needs of the student, including the style that I teach, the pace at which I teach, and the materials that I use. I believe that good music lessons should be an engaging balance of learning foundational technique, understanding fundamental concepts of music theory, gaining performance experience, and of course, having fun while doing it!
