Hi, I'm Alex! I'm a passionate vocal technician and coach who is ready to help you unlock the full potential of your unique voice. I've been singing my whole life and I've wanted to be a teacher my whole life! I have been teaching full time for five years after getting my masters degree form Carnegie Mellon University. As a performer, I was a member of the Grammy®-award winning Houston Chamber Choir, and have performed on stages around the country and the world. My favorite stage credits include Young Frankenstein (The Monster), Singin in the Rain (R.F. Simpson), Catch Me If You Can (Roger Strong), Neil Simon's Rumors (Ken Gorman), One Man, Two Guvnors (Stanley Stubbers), The Magic Flute (Sarastro), and The Marriage of Figaro (Bartolo). In addition to theatrical roles, I also hove over a decade of choral experience including concert, symphonic, and madrigal choirs as well as vocal jazz. I amd the librettist of the short opera PETROV, which, in 2019, had its international premiere in Belgrade, Serbia. In addition to being a performer and creator, I worked as the Music Director for Santa’s Rockin’ Reindeer at Houston’s Express Children’s Theatre. I am a proud member of NATS and a member of the Somatic Voicework™ community.
I've been teaching full time for 5 years, and I am passionate about helping people unlock the full potential of their voice. Every voice is unique- it's cliche, but it's true! It's what makes singing such a powerful tool of artistry. Here's how I help along the way: Kids (Ages 8-12) We’ll build good, healthy vocal habits at a young age so kids are ready to blossom as they grow. They’ll achieve music literacy by using solfege (Do, Re, Mi) and ear training exercises, and kindle a lifelong love of music by having a lot of fun! Teens (Ages 13-18) This can be a somewhat challenging part of your vocal life (yay puberty!), and we’ll focus on building smart singing habits to help you come out of it healthy and stronger than ever! We will start building a flexible, and balanced vocal instrument so you can express yourself in a healthy way. By using music to help discover who you are as a singer and artist, you’ll be able to start exploring more challenging and meaningful songs by focusing on genuine storytelling. Adult Professionals and Lifelong Learners Whether a seasoned singer or complete beginner, we’ll focus on the building blocks of a healthy voice so you have the ability to express yourself fearlessly! Together we’ll build a strong, flexible, and balanced voice (it’s not just about range!) and work on the nuances of style, personality, and character in songs.
My teaching is rooted in the philosophy of functional singing, which means everything I teach has a purpose rooted in the physiology of singing. We do a lot of different exercises and say a lot of funny sounding words, but each exercise is carefully crafted to maximize training your voice's flexibility, agility, or strength. Similar to how you might do a bicep curl to make your bicep stronger, vocal exercises are part of a broader "vocal workout" regimen based on what your voice needs on any given day. For piano, I teach using the Faber Piano Adventure series, up to level 5.
My teaching style stems from my experience as a professional singer. I’ve been in GRAMMY award winning groups and performed in plays, musicals, and choirs all around the world AND I’m still performing. Some teachers tell you what to do or how to sound, but they don’t have any idea what it’s like to live a performer’s lifestyle. They have a single way to teach all voices and all types of singing without concern for your individual needs. My practical performance experience mixed with the principles of Somatic Voicework™(the Lovetri Method) means the most important thing is YOU and YOUR voice. Every voice is different and special in its own way - you deserve to get practical training customized to fit your unique voice. As a proud member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), you can be sure your lessons are up to date with the latest trends, techniques, and voice research in order to find the best ways to get you singing.
