1996-Concert for the Governor of Estado Amazonas, Venezuela
1997-Acceptance to the Conservatory Mozarteum
I have been playing classical and spanish guitar since the age of 13. While I started off with folk music, I quickly fell in love with classical and Spanish guitar. This is in part due to my motherś Venezuelan heritage and my fatherś Dutch heritage. I grew up appreciating my parents' love for music and through them, continued on that love via the guitar. At the age of 18, I began my guitar studies at the Conservatory Mozarteum in Salzburg Austria. There, I studied under the Chair for Guitar studies Matthias Seidel and also Goran Ivanovich, a former student of Eliot Fisk.
While studying at the Mozarteum Conservatory, I provided private lessons for middle and high school students. During my time of classical guitar studies, I performed in various recitals including a concert for the Govenor of Estados Amazonas in Venezuela in 1996. These experiences have helped me grow as a confident musician. I am very grateful to my maestros for teaching me proper pedagogy, guitar technique but also encouraging all styles of music for guitar. While this was a challenging work load, I was also taught to enjoy music and to love it. By loving what you play, you provide that same love for the students. This has been a key component as a music teacher. While being a full time teacher, I am enjoying teaching Music Appreciation for my high school students and performing for weddings, private parties and playing for restaurants.
I prefer to teach beginners utilizing the Pepe Romero and Christopher Parkening technique. I also prefer teaching all beginning students using the classical method as this provides more variety using the left and right hand techniques. Should students wish to continue on with different styles suchas jazz, blues, latin jazz and so forth, having the left and right hand techniques will make the students far more versatile. Another key aspect to my teaching is figuring out students'time management. This allows for both teacher and student to create realistic goals for successful daily practice. Review of material and repetition of songs and pieces are very important for advancement.
My main goal for my students is for them to realize the musicality within, to reach their potential, and for them to find what musical styles they appreciate the most. While I do wish to foster site reading and the classical guitar method, I will cater lessons to different student interest. Encouragement and challenging are vital to student success. To become a guitar player takes patience and diligence, so for me it is very important to foster a love for the guitar with my students. To help the students realize their gifts and potential is very rewarding. Lastly, building confidence as a guitar player is very improtant! When appropriate, I will encourage my students to play at a recitals, for their families and school talent shows or other venues for exposure. Music is not only for the individual but to be shared for all!
In my first days of Music Appreciation, the first activity we usually did is just listen to Mr. P. playing the guitar and pick out any emotions expressed out of it. To connect with the music is a main component of playing an instrument, and as a pianist, I enjoyed the class because not only it wasn't structured like a typical music class (like ones in middle school), the information learned actually developed, for me, a greater sense of appreciating music and its history, which we briefly explored. To have the final test be based on making one's own piece also sent out a message, as the "theory" part of music was put into performance, and each of the students got to express his or her musical connection, which was one of the desired goals of the teacher. Not only do I recommend the class, I acclaim Mr. P. for the special effort he puts to help each individual student of the class, which is blended with comedy and efficiency.
Mr. P. is an excellent music teacher! He is very patient, but he also sees opportunity in his students and pushes them to also do more. Mr. P. adds a practical and historical aspect to the music, as well as throughly explaining the music itself. I would recommend Mr. P. to anyone!!
He is a really great music teacher. I learned how to read music notes. He has a really great teaching style. We had many guitar sessions through which we composed our own songs.
Mr. P. is an amazing music teacher. He was my teacher for music appreciation and taught me how to play guitar. At the very beginning of the class, I was extremely confused and had no clue how to read or play msuic off of it. Once I addressed him that I was confused, he explained it throughly till I understood completely. His skills helped me understand how to play the guitar smoothly and correctly. Just in one semester, I learned how to play nurmerous Christmas songs, Happy Birthday, and he even taught me how to write my own song which I successfully did because of how good his teaching skills were. I am very thankful I had him as a music teacher because I don't think any other teacher would help me learn and understand music the way he did.
Alright, so you may see all these 5 stars and think "Wow, I bet most these reviews are biased." or "He didn't earn all those 5 stars." Well my friend, you couldn't be more wrong. Mr. P. is an extraordinary teacher for entry level music courses. He is a very hands-on teacher, always letting us use guitars and individually teaching us the strings and how to properly play them. On top of that, he grants us a lot of creative freedom. Matter of fact, our final presentation was to create our own musical piece from the knowledge we learned over the course. He is an extremely helpful teacher who isn't afraid to help a student 1-1. I would definitely recommend Mr. P. to any person attempting to learn the guitar.
Mr P. is a great teacher, he allows you to pick which songs you learn (to a reasonable extent), so if a song ever catches your eye, you can learn it. He provides excellent feedback on technique, and he instills a respect for the composers of the pieces you learn.
