Overview:
I am an ambitious and open-minded teacher always looking to better myself and my students. I have been playing the piano for 11 years in addition to singing for 5 years. Although I am trained classically in piano and voice, I also like to work at a variety of genres as well as learn other instruments. It's always fun, especially with my students, to explore different flavors music has to offer. As of now, I teach Music and Chess at an academy and summer camp in Jersey City and study Music Education at William Paterson University.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience started before I entered college. While I was in high school, I taught private piano lessons to my mother's friend's children and other family members. In addition to teaching private lessons, I was a tenor section leader in my choir and competed in many choral competitions and music festivals. As I entered college, I began to teach more privately, gaining more experience as I went along. Throughout college, I was curious and adventurous; I began learning to play the viola and the violin, played the violin and piano for my college orchestra, performed in a few instrumental ensembles, Lead and compose for my A Cappella ensemble and sing for my concert choir and chamber choir while studying music. In addition, I've been the Music and Chess Teacher at HCST Saturday Kids Academy and Summer Camp. Overall, I was an anxious and closed minded individual. Through many failures and experiences, I became more driven, self-aware, confident, and better. My only goal in mind is to become a better mentor and role model for inspiring musicians.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, I prefer to use the Alfred's Basic Piano Course books. Once the student gets down the fundamentals and becomes more technically proficient, I introduce solo repertoire and get them started with some fun and musical etudes to improve finger dexterity. I also like to make the lessons fun and entertaining for the kids by playing some music games or giving rewards. For adult students, I try to find appropriate beginner piano books. In addition, I try to get a feel for what they to like play and see what styles they're interested in. Overall, I do what I can to meet the needs of the student while teaching proper technique.
LESSON STYLE
Not all students are created the same! I do my best to adjust my teaching style and lesson for each student. Especially for novice students, I adjust the pace in order for the student to ease into the instrument. Especially with piano, I advocate warming up and practicing effectively. In my opinion, it is best to work smarter and be efficient with practice time. It is important to me to not only have good technique and a fundamental knowledge of music theory, but to understand the who, what, where, when, how, and why in the music. So with every lesson, the student eventually learns to find his or her own sound.
