I am a dedicated, fun music teacher who loves watching their students grow into their fullest voice. In December of 2020, I graduated from Georgia State University with a Bachelor's degree in Choral/General Music Education. I am a middle school choir director Monday-Friday. Though my primary focus is teaching, I have performing experience in musical theatre, classical, pop, country and rock n roll. I performed in a band for about three years while in college. I have sung in many choirs that have traveled out of state for competitions. I would love to help any future super star reach their dreams!
My teaching experience began in college when I start teaching my first voice students in 2017. I have taught voice lessons to beginners who need help matching pitch. I have taught voice lessons to college students with varying performance backgrounds! I constantly strive to provide my students with a safe space so that learning can be as easy and fun as possible. I believe that voice lessons need to focus on putting skills and techniques into context, so the majority of our lesson time will be spent on working repertoire while incorporating healthy vocal technique. I believe that short, daily practice is essential to growing as a musician so my students will be expected to have learned more of their repertoire each time we meet for a lesson.
Before committing to long term lessons with a student, I like to get to know my student and their musical goals. Want to get the lead in your school musical? Or audition for that advanced choir class? Or maybe Depending on the age and skill level of my students, I assign 1-5 repertoire pieces to work on. For my performing students, I stress the importance of having multiple audition pieces under your belt at all times. For my students who are more focused on skill growth, I stress the importance of putting the technique and skills I teach into context with the songs I assign. During the hour lesson, I spend roughly 5-7 minutes warming up the voice, then we jump right into working on repertoire. I like to balance the repertoire selections with an even amount of songs chosen by me and by the student to ensure that they stay engaged and enjoy learning with me!
I have no expectations of my students until they show me what they're capable of. After our first two lessons, I start to really stress the importance of practicing on their own time as well. Singing is part muscle memory and your muscles can't memorize what they aren't consistently doing! I use a very kinesthetic approach to my teaching in that I focus on how the entire body feels when my student is singing the correct way versus how it feels when they are singing incorrectly (unhealthily). This kind of self-awareness takes time, and every student moves at their own pace, so while I encourage my students to practice as much as they can, I understand that this process can become very frustrating (I know it was for me!) and always strive to instill confidence in my students throughout the entire learning process!
I just started taking lessons with her and she's great! She's very kind and extremely patient. It's my first time ever taking private lessons and it has definitely been a bit of a struggle for me, but she has been super helpful. During our lessons she super constructive, but also kind. I very much would recommend her and really have been enjoying our lessons thus far.
