I am a versatile and passionate performer originally hailing from the Pacific Northwest. I’ve been based out of NYC for the past 10 years, when I relocated to pursue my masters in opera.
I have made a name for myself performing on land and at sea, raising over 10k for the Trevor Project, while sharing my one woman show with invited guests at the famed Davenport Theater in 2016. While at sea, I’ve been a resident lead vocalist and vocal captain of my casts.
Always pursuing leadership roles in any ensemble setting, I continue to discover my love for helping sculp others to reach their full potential as a performer.
While my degrees were both received within the requirements of a classical genre, my passion and style are no where limited to it. I teach and perform across the board and have especially a love for musical theater.
I also have a substantial acting background and use it as influence in my vocal performance and teaching technique.
My experience in teaching started when I was in undergraduate school fullfilling my vocal pedagogy requirements and was instantly drawn to it.
I have always been selected to be the section leader in choir or the vocal coach in my casts and it has allowed me to better understand how we learn as musicians and I’ve taken that with me into my own private studio.
Having just returned from 3 years performing at sea, I’m looking to build my studio even more and am looking forward to bringing on new students of all ages, styles, and skill sets.
I’d also like to mention that while I do not feel comfortable teaching piano or violin, I have some background in both, which I feel was imperative for shaping me into the musician I am.
I believe that each student having come from their own background requires a method tailored to their own needs. Younger students may require basics, but if they’ve played an instrument and have a strong understanding of the fundamentals and building blocks of music, they can be miles ahead of the curve. That being said, I like to start new students off by allowing them to sing a song that they love to sing. It can be any style they want, as long as it’s special to them.
After I get a good sense of their instrument, I believe vocalizing with the student builds a an immediate rapport and instantly allows us to see where the voice naturally sits and where we can allow for healthy extensions.
After I feel my students have progressed with fundamentals, I introduce solo material on a need basis.
For my adult students, my approach is similar. My goal is to keep lessons interesting, challenging, and entertaining.
I’ve always found it incredibly rewarding when hard work pays off, and this means something different to everyone. I’ve found in my own studies that I can have breakthrough moments merely vocalizing or finally getting that one measure perfect after I’ve spent a day working at it over and over. As a vocal captain for fellow professional colleagues, hearing their voices come together in harmony after working diligently on a piece of music has taken me to that place in your soul where you feel like you’ve awakened.
I believe that that feeling is one of the best in the world and can be experienced in a voice lesson.
I believe in setting realistic expectations based on each student’s needs, but taking the time not to gloss over those potential moments.
