I am a composer and musicologist. Currently I am an active composer and working on multiple materials for performances. I am also writing an extensive book on the music of Star Wars. it will cover all the 9 films (including the upcoming episode 9). I have a Doctor of Musial Arts Degree from Claremont Graduate University. I have taught both in the classroom and one on one lessons for 25 years. I have taught music to K-12 and the College level. I teach piano, music theory, music composition, and music technology for private lessons. I enjoy working with student and watching them progress as they meet their goals.
I started teaching during my last couple of years of my undergraduate years in college. I knew deep in my heart that I was meant to teach as I am not just a teacher but that is who I am. I started with teaching private lessons, but then went onto teaching in the classroom. I wanted to work my way towards my Doctoral Degree because I knew that is what I should be doing. It just feels right when I am teaching. My experience is always positive when I teach my students because at the end of the day I feel accomplished that I have given my service and my knowledge to students.
I use the Alfred teaching method in my lessons, however I do not stop there. Over the years I have developed my own sense of method which I have incorporated into my lessons. For children and Middle school level students I make use of the iPad and a MIDI keyboard to help them learn musical notes and music theory. I use a variety of music apps to help and guide them with a fun activity to learn and develop their reading skills.
I split lessons with 1) musical materials, including new skills 2) Skill building with scales, music theory, the iPad 3) and for those who want to learn to compose I also add in composing their own melodic lines and arrangements. For the older students and for adults I also have a system of fake book playing where I teach them the chord progressions and use them to create accompaniment patters to a given melody. I like my lessons so be active, engaging and fun so therefore having different elements added to the lessons become important for the best experience for my students.
I treat each student individually. Everyone has their own pace of learning and their own capabilities. I cater my lessons towards their needs. It is important as so they can have a successful learning experience and development. I also like to learn about what kind of music they like and I find the music they want to learn at their skill level. I usually incorporate several different genres into the lessons that they desire to learn, including Pop, Musical Theatre, Film Music, and even world music. This way the lessons are more about what they want to perform for their audience rather than what I want them to perform. I balance it with the assigned materials and their own choices.
