Bachelor Degree: Superior Art Institute in Havana (ISA)
I grew up in a family of musicians and learned how to play the piano and read music at the age of five. With my father being an Orchestra Conductor, the sound of classical music was present at home all the time. I started my 12 years long musical education at Conservatory Manuel Saumell when I was 11, continuing at Conservatory Amadeo Roldan and ending with a Bachelor degree in Classical Percussion at the Superior Institute of Arts in Havana. My first venture with popular music was in 1986 playing vibraphone with SinTrans, a jazz group founded at the Conservatory Amadeo Roldán. SinTrans got to perform at the International Jazz Festival in Havana in 1987 and 1988. In 1993 I moved to Stockholm, Sweden where I developed my professional career as a musician, performing and recording with many of the most prominent artists and acts in Sweden: Nordman, Bo Kaspers Orkester, Bebo Valdés, Lill Lindfors, Peter Jöback, Carola, Blacknuss All Stars, Stockholm Folk Big Band, Jonas Knutsson, Magnus Lindgren & Radiojazzgruppen, Janne Tolf and Mats Holmkvists Big Band to name a few. I toured all around Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, UK, France and other European countries, covering various genres like Pop, Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul, Funk, Fusion, Folklore, Salsa, Latin Jazz and much more. In 1998 I became Musical Director of the group Los Tigres, with which I began to develop my compositional and arranging skills.. In 2001 I founded the group SonEra, now performing only my own compositions and arrangements. During this period of time I also developed my teaching career, working as a drum, percussion and piano teacher at Rinkeby Music School, Kulturama and at the Royal Academy of Music in Stockholm. I also presented Cuban music workshops all over Sweden. In January 2004 I left Stockholm for Madrid, looking for new experiences as a Percussionist, Composer and Producer. In Spain I shared stage as well as studios with various artist such as Aute, Beatriz Luengo, Andy & Lucas, Victoria Abril, David Bisbal, Paco Ortega, Habana Blues, David Bustamante, YADAM and Cruceta Flamenco among many others. I then moved to Miami, where I have been residing for the past 12 years. During this time I have been Musical Director, Vibraphonist, Percussionist and Composer of my own project Alfredo Chacón Groove, with which I have recorded 3 albums and have performed in clubs and festivals. I have also performed with artists such as David Bisbal, Paquito de Rivera, Diego Torres, Carlos Rivera, Arash, Leoni Torres and many others, always trying to combine touring with my teaching work at Encore Music School and Doral Conservatory.
I started teaching during my days at the Conservatory, as it was required in the study program. I graduated as a performer and educator in classical and Afro-Cuban percussion, with the piano as a complementary instrument. Teaching has always been an important and constant part of my career, since I have always viewed teaching as a learning tool. I came to realize that the process of constantly finding new ways to make the students understand and interiorize something, was of great benefit to myself.
I will pay special attention to the skill and learning speed of the student. When it comes to reading material and books, I have plenty and will be using some of them depending on the level of the students.. For the drums: The Drummer's Cookbook by John Pickering, 200 Paradiddle Exercises For Drums, Advance Techniques for the Modern Drummer by Jim Chapin, Hal Leonard Drumset Method Complete Edition. For piano, Classic Thems by the Masters by James Bastien, Selected Piano Masterpieces to name a few.
My goal will be to make the student feel relaxed and confident, and to find a way to make the process as easy as possible, always taking into account the interests and preferences of each student. As a teacher, my teaching style revolves around three key principles: passion, technique, and creativity. I am dedicated to instilling a love for the instrument in my students while equipping them with essential skills and encouraging their individuality and musical expression. Through a balanced approach that combines technical mastery, musicality, and personal creativity, I aim to inspire and empower my students to become well-rounded musicians.
