ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Bachelor Degree: Mechanical Engineering
Overview:
I am a 36 year old Egyptian from Cairo currently living in Oakland, CA. I started drumming at age 12, influenced by my older brother who introduced me to music at an early age. My earliest influence was rock music (classic rock, progressive rock and some metal). My life changed after discovering Miles Davis and my love for jazz. It changed again when I discovered IDM electronic music and came to the realization that good music is good music and quickly embraced all genres and styles, with the belief that in order to be a successful professional drummer, one must be open to all and learn as much styles as one can. I have performed countless times at the Cairo Jazz Club, Cairo Opera House, as well as many other cultural centers and theaters all over Egypt. Some of the acts I've been a part of include an electro-acoustic duo with synths and drums, an industrial electronic rock band writing songs in English and Arabic. I was also the lead drummer for the AUCeyat Arab music ensemble for many years. It was there with AUCeyat at the American University in Cairo that I met my now wife who is also a tabla player. My main instrument is western drum kit, however being Egyptian I have always been familiar with and influenced by Egyptian rhythms and in 2015, I started taking lessons with a tabla (darbuka/doumbek) master, and have been teaching tabla myself to students for 5 years now. Recently relocated to Oakland in 2023 with my wife, I am excited to share my passion for percussion with Bay Area students to help them reach their drumming goals!
EXPERIENCE
For 20+ years, I have been part of Cairo's diverse music scene, performing live with a variety of musical acts and teaching drums to students for 12+ years. I've had the opportunity to learn and play different genres with a particular affinity for rock, jazz/funk, electronic music and Egyptian percussion, having been the drummer for The American University in Cairo Arab music ensemble for many years. -Learn basic to advanced drumming skills: technique, independence, orchestration and understand different musical styles of drumming. -Choose to focus on drum kit, Egyptian percussion (tabla/darbuka, duf) or both. -All skill levels welcome (ages 5+) -Taught in a safe, fun environment in Upper Rockridge
METHODS USED
Technique: grip, stroke methods, posture, symmetry, breathing, set up. Rudiments: with and without metronome, increasing tempo by 5 bpm, great way to warm up for any lesson. Beats/Rhythms/Styles: rock, pop, jazz, funk, hip hop, reggae, Arab, African + more. Genre/style identifiers and characteristics. Independence: hands and feet exercises for fluidity and freedom of expression. Orchestration and Arrangement: utilizing the variety of percussion instruments available at the studio to demonstrate rhythms and sounds. Developing Your Own Sound: dynamics, feel, energy, approach, signature fills, instrumentation. Videos and Inspiration: studying the greats from both my favorite and student's favorite drummers.
LESSON STYLE
I am super passionate about drumming and it is important that lessons are fun and engaging. I like to mix up the content of the class and am flexible as to the student's objectives and needs. I like to talk in terms of concepts and approach to drumming, both mentally and physically, in order to visualize and simplify ideas. I am quite detail oriented when it comes to foundational technique with a strong belief that understanding rhythmic relations and styles is key to significantly faster improvement.

Ali is a passionate and patient instructor! When I started drum kit lessons, I had some experience with hand drumming and Ali was able to leverage my background in a way that helped me transfer my existing skills to drum kit. He is a very methodical instructor and his curriculum offers a strong foundation in technique while offering lots of opportunity to have fun playing beats and enjoy the learning process. As a student, I was very conscious of the way he scaffolded skills and techniques, helping me move from basic rhythms to layering on fills and licks as I became more proficient.  He offered great recommendations for listening music so I could recognize playing styles I like in order to develop my own sound. I recommended him to a friend whose 5 year-old daughter expressed an interest in playing, and had the pleasure of seeing him teach her. Ali was adept at building trust with her, and adjusting his teaching style to help her build beginning skills while creating a fun atmosphere and cultivating a love for music. I would definitely recommend him for kids too!

Ali is such a gifted drummer and even better teacher! Learning how to play the drums has been on my bucket list, and to be a novice in my mid-30s was daunting. He has made the experience so easy and a TON of fun. He has such a wide range of knowledge that he applies in every way of teaching, from simpler rudiments to different beats and fills. He's free of judgement and full of encouragement. I highly recommend Ali as your drum teacher!
