Overview:
I have been a Voice and Piano teacher for over 5 years now. After earning my Master's Degree in Voice Performance from Georgia State University in Atlanta I immediately began teaching a studio of 50 students ranging in age from 4-70 years old. I have experience performing and teaching in many genres, including Classical, Opera, Musical Theatre, Pop, Soul, R & B, Country, and Rock. I have organized numerous recitals and performances and have multiple students who went on to major in music in college, as well as, record and perform professionally. My goal as a Voice and Piano Instructor is to motivate and inspire students to become the best musicians they can be by creating a beautiful, unique sound; proper technique, a strong work ethic, and a love and appreciation for music that will last their entire lives.
EXPERIENCE
I love to teach! Having been a music instructor for over 5 years now and performing since I was 5 years old, I have learned many techniques to keep a student excited and engaged in the learning process. Practice is key! So, for my younger students, I like for them to create practice logs for themselves and personal goals, which I check weekly. This helps to make them better musicians, as well as, teaching them responsibility, accountability, and a strong work ethic. When they discover that practice makes all the difference it gives them a love and passion for their craft. I try to keep things fun so that a student does not get burnt out or bored by mixing up the music we learn. For example, we may be working on a classical piece, music theory, a popular/contemporary song and song writing all at the same time to keep the student interested. Once a student is ready, I encourage them to perform in recitals, talent shows and even open mics. We work on stage presence and do certain exercises to get more comfortable performing.
METHODS USED
For beginning voice students, we start with the fundamentals, creating a good technique and knowledge of important scales and warm ups for the voice. We usually choose a song familiar to them to work on first. Depending on the age of my piano students, I like to start with Faber's Piano Adventure books. They are fun and have lots of great songs, activities and work books to keep the student engaged. For Adults, I find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons interesting and exciting, no matter their ability level.
LESSON STYLE
The most rewarding thing to see as a teacher is the passion that my students develop for music! To keep the student motivated we set goals weekly so that they are constantly improving. I understand that each student progresses at different speeds so some weeks the goal may be small and some weeks it may be greater and require more time. But they are constantly growing and working to be the best they can be. I believe this is what creates confidence and passion. I like to encourage all my students to keep a positive attitude, acknowledging their accomplishments, big or small.
