Overview:
I am first and foremost a student. I love being a student and love being open to new forms of music and anything to better my education. In May of 2017 I graduated from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a Bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance. Performance has taught me multiple languages, taken me around the U.S. and parts of Europe, working with the top musicians in the world. Since graduation I have been working on my own artistry and getting back to my roots as a singer song writer. As a teacher, I want to provide my students with the tools they need to express theirselves through music; whether it be classical, pop, song writing, or learning how to play with multiple musicians. I prefer to think of myself as a coach, and with that mindset I allow the student to drive the lessons, this way we can communicate and develop goals that are fun and successful.
EXPERIENCE
My first experience giving lessons actually began eight years ago with my first instrument, the guitar. I have been playing guitar since I was 7 years old, though I still consider Voice my main instrument. This was my first experience teaching and everything I needed to unleash the excitement and passion my instructors had shown me throughout my life. Since then I have been teaching beginner level piano and beginner to intermediate voice lessons in both my home state of Michigan, and the greater Boston area. I believe everyone, even teachers are students forever and we are all equal in this journey. I learn just as much, if not more from my students. I find the most progress in students are when they speak out and meet me halfway in the lesson. I am more than happy to adjust my methods as a teacher because no student is the same. I currently work with people with disabilities in music around the greater Boston area, but want to expand all around in the beautiful state of Rhode Island! I want to spread my love of music for people of all abilities, especially people that are new to learning music.
METHODS USED
All in all, my approach of teaching is holistic with innovative pedagogical methods. I will observe and adjust the student based on their skills and goals so they may learn the instrument of choice to their greatest abilities. For all levels, I like to listen to their goals and interests when it comes to music; what do you want to achieve by learning an instrument? This way we can move forward in the most efficient and fun way possible. My goal is to keep my students interested and I will constantly be checking in to see how I may improve as a teacher; what is/isn’t working for you?
LESSON STYLE
I am a goal setter and overachiever so I like to work with the student to set goals that will not be discouraging. I believe that learning how to play an instrument/sing with others in an ensemble setting helps reinforce what we work on in the lesson. As a multi-instrumentalist, I enjoy finding songs we can eventually play together while implementing technique and structure. I’ve done everything from covers, to song writing, to singing operatic repertoire in 5 different languages. I am a flexible teacher with a lot of different methods.
