Course Work: Beth Freeman Vocal Arts Studio
Hello! My name is Ali, and I am a creative, introverted, romantic and silly soul. I am the wife to a wonderful, mild man and the mother of a rambunctious nearly-two-year old boy. My husband and I share a love for vintage fashion, adventuring outdoors, and music. I love travel and have spent considerable amounts of time in Europe and South America. I speak some German, Spanish, and am currently attempting to learn Japanese. My passion for music started early... my first memories include sitting at the piano, singing with my mother. I hope the same for my little man, and we often mess around at my old piano together. Starting at age 10, I started my own formal vocal education through a private teacher in the beautiful coastal redwood-laden hills of Guerneville, California. My teacher, Beth Freeman, was an incredible woman, and continues to inspire me. I learned that singing (especially opera, which was her specialty) is a whole-body workout, and like any athletic endeavor, requires regular practice and determination to improve! I also learned that one's mood and emotional well-being has a huge impact on one's ability to control and project their voice... and what a lesson for life this was, as well. And so it was that my weekly singing lessons became my refuge, my therapy, and the source of much of my inner strength. I think this is true for many, and it is my hope that by encouraging your inner voice to thrive and shine, so also will you as a person thrive and shine. I am so excited to meet you and help you to become the musician you aspire to be!
I have taught a variety of ages and styles, from young ones learning to harness their enthusiasm for music, to adults breaking through their own anxieties to let their inner voices shine. I have also had some experience with teaching a chorus, which included a variety of backgrounds and ages, to learn to project and harmonize with one another. I believe your voice is like any muscle, and with regular practice, determination and exercise, you can reach your goals! Most important of all, however, is that you have fun in your lessons. Music should be a beautiful and enjoyable experience of self-expression.
For beginners, I like to divide the lesson up into smaller lessons in order to learn the fundamentals of singing - how to breathe, stand, hold your face, and etc - using diagrams and videos to make it fun and easier to learn. Most importantly, I take the time to get to know my students so I'll know what their goals are and what they'd like to achieve through vocal coaching. I also want to know what interests my students so I can tailor my lessons specifically to them. If you're not having a lovely time, then I feel that I'm not doing my job as a teacher. This is not to say that it will always be easy - like most worthwhile endeavors, it will surely take some work on your part - but it will absolutely be rewarding!
Finding your voice is so much more than learning the techniques of singing. Music is a beautiful way to express emotions and experiences, and seeing a student progress to the point where they can achieve this is such a beautiful thing, like watching a rare flower blossom. What a privilege for me to be a part of this experience. I aim to make my lessons realistic, setting small achievable goals. I like to really get to know my students so I can tailor my lessons to each person. This way, I can do my part to help you find your voice and help you blossom into the beautiful musician you are.
