Bachelor of Music Education, Vandercook College of Music
Awards:
Illinois Future Teacher's Corp Scholarship
Overview:
I was a teacher in the public schools, and I wanted to be able to give more one-on-one attention to students. I wanted to be able to teach in a way that uplifts students and makes them excited about music. I also wanted to be able to make students feel comfortable and have fun. I have a degree from Vandercook College of Music in Music Education. I like to teach using the Vandercook method and give students a strong foundation on their instrument. I am in the process of getting set up to teach online lessons! I hope to be set up by September 2020 to accept new online students.
EXPERIENCE
I taught general music, choir, piano, and band in the public schools. I also worked in an after school youth orchestra, teaching woodwinds. Before that, I taught guitar to friends and some beginning students. I also helped my classmates who were learning guitar. I have mostly worked with beginners, and some more intermediate students. I have taught in the classroom setting and small group lessons, and some one-on-one lessons. I feel my greatest strength is teaching beginners and elementary aged students. I have had the most success with band students seeking to excel in their school band programs.
METHODS USED
I like to use a combination of methods and method books. For a beginning band student I would use Standard Of Excellence of Essential Elements. For guitar students I like to use a combination of methods, depending on the student. I like to use the Old Town School's book for their first songs or Essential Elements for guitar. I like to use a method for guitar that emphasizes reading notes instead of just tabs, and also emphasizes rest stroke and free stroke. Once the student becomes familiar with the guitar then I like to focus on music they are interested in, once they know the basics of the instrument. I like to have students download a tuner app on their phone as well as a guitar tab app. This is convenient for them and free and always available.
LESSON STYLE
I like to see students getting excited about learning new concepts in music. I also like to see music becoming a part of their lives and learning. I enjoy passing on what I've been given. I like to see music becoming a part of students lives and being an enjoyable experience for years to come. One area I specialize in is helping students with their band or ensemble music and giving them the extra help they may need to excel in their band or choir classes in school. I also like to wok on music that interests them and is fun for them!
