Alissa is a young musician from Philadelphia, who has been studying piano and violin for 13 years. Philadelphia Performing Arts Charter School introduced Ali to orchestra and stage performance, having performed at various venues on the Avenue of the Arts, such as the Kimmel Center and Merriam theater. From there, she attended Creative and Performing Arts High School, a school that truly sculpted the creativity, individuality, and ambition that makes music a passion, rather than just a class. CAPA provided Alissa with the opportunity to play and perform with the All-City Philadelphia Orchestra, Curtis Institute of Music, Temple Orchestra, as well as performing with the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Yannick Nézet-séguin. Alissa continued on to Rowan College after high school, continuing to teach lessons from home. In addition to consistent practice, Alissa has tutored many younger students for piano and violin within her schools, and has taught lessons to children of friends and family. Her teaching style enforces creativity, individuality, and a thorough understanding of music theory as a tool to express yourself through music. She believes that introduction to music should never feel like a chore; a first impression to an instrument should be fun and exciting.
During my middle through high school years as a performing arts student, I began teaching to the younger grades because I loved filling my time with music performance and education. I was honored to perform at various venues on Philadelphia's Avenue of the Arts, such as the Kimmel Center. I have performed with the Curtis Institute of Music, Temple University's orchestra, the All-City Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as multiple performances with the conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra. Majority of my performances were with violin, while my piano experience has been extensive through private lessons, school, and personal passion for the instrument.
When it comes to teaching beginner piano, my philosophy is to avoid making lessons and assignments feel like a monotonous chore. If a student feels overwhelmed and/or uninterested in completing assignments and attending lessons, it can have the same affect as being assigned too much school work and house chores; the student will most likely lose interest in learning. As a young musician, I make sure that my students look forward to their lessons by reinforcing the idea of music as a form of artistic expression. My teaching methods collide the necessary skills of reading and playing music with a unique twist based on the student's interests. This keeps them excited to learn!
My teaching style revolves around a student's interests, and my lessons are modified and personalized for each individual. Every student has a different style of their own, and I work hard to help them develope their style. Learning music should never feel like a chore; it should be a form of self expression. Rather than using only lesson books to teach, i also provide them a blank and personalized lesson journal, in which they learn the foundations of writing, reading and understanding sheet music and music theory. When student's start to write their own songs, i notice a huge spark of interest and excitement, which is my goal for everyone I teach.
