DMA, Boston University MM, Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University BM, Oberlin College
I am a Professor of Music at several colleges, and have earned several faculty development awards in online music teaching.
Fortunately, music has been the central part of my life since I began lessons. Early on I knew I wanted to be a professional, and practiced to be able to study at some of the best music institutions in this country. My first formal training took place at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. Oberlin College, the Aspen Music Festival, Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University and Carnegie Hall followed. My studies involved primary instruction from Michel Debost, Robert Willoughby, Mark Sparks, and Nadine Asin.
For 26 years I have had the pleasure of teaching music to students of all ages. Since I started lessons young, I have taken lessons for as many years I have taught. My firsthand knowledge leads me to focus on the importance of a good teacher/student relationship, because it is directly linked to student motivation. During my training, I studied with professors at top music institutions, and am fortunate to have acquired a wealth of experience from professionals at the peak of their careers. In my own teaching, I aim to blend my personal lesson knowledge and experience with my own teaching philosophy. In this way, students benefit from an approach of teaching which combines the best of both worlds.
My methods would slightly vary on what goals the student is trying to achieve. However, all musicians must have a basic grasp of technique and fundamental skills in order to express music the way they would like to. Beginning with an overall assessment of technique is essential, and working to maintain and expand that level of proficiency is important for instrumentalists. After a routine has been established for warm ups and extension, I like to incorporate those skills into songs, pieces, or repertoire.
I meet students at their skill level, to ensure that they enjoy their learning experience. From there, we work together at a pace that is right for the student. This varies from person to person, and depends on the outcomes they want to achieve. I want students to stretch in order to expand their abilities, and reach levels they could not find without guided assistance, but I am not a demanding taskmaster. We will work as a team to meat the student's goals, while enjoying the experience of the learning process.
Kaylyn is a very professional teacher. She has extensive knowledge when it comes to music esp. flute. She is patient with my kids, gives advice on techniques, sound, care of flute, etc. She is very approachable and easy to talk to but my kids respect and like her a lot. She is also very flexible with schedule. We're very happy with Ms. Kaylyn!
