Homer Mensch Award - Manhattan School of Music
Concerto Competition Winner - Double Bass - Indiana University
Tanglewood Fellow
National Symphony Orchestra/Detroit Symphony Orchestra Substitute Bass
I am a professional classical bassist turned singer/songwriter - I also teach and play cello and general music. For over a decade I have performed with orchestras, chamber ensembles, bands, duets, trios, solo, etc... as well as teaching students of a variety of instruments and ages. Besides bass, I have taught piano, cello, pop vocals, ensemble skills, music theory, music production, and coached based on individual projects. I have played with the National Symphony at the Kennedy Center, in Russia, and at Carnegie Hall as a substitute musician as well as Quintango, a tango group based out of Alexandria, VA. I write my own music as well as arrange covers of songs of any genre for any instrument/ensemble and can help students do the same.
I have always been passionate about the role music can play in the lives of people of any age, and have enjoyed numerous opportunities to be a part of the music education of many. My experience includes eleven years of private teaching combined with professional performance experience around the world. I have a pedagogical approach to teaching that I like to combine with the specific interests and needs of the student. I love meeting and working with new people of all ages and seeing where this journey can take us!
Together we will create a custom lesson plan including things like scales, etudes, solos, excerpts, and covers. I like to direct students to play scales and etudes with drones that can be found online or from an app. and can offer many more helpful practice techniques. I can teach classical bass, piano, and cello, as well as pop/rock bass, piano, cello, or vocal performance. I also teach music composition, performing and arranging covers, and can coach any instrument for specific performances. I am happy to teach in person or online.
My teaching style revolves around the interest of the student combined with my overall experience with one ultimate goal being that the student will develop the tools to teach themselves along the way. I like to use relevant recordings to play along with as well as simply recording the student and playing it back during the lesson. I will keep a written log of our progress and will have it available for the student as a reference as well as encouraging them to do the same. Homework is designated based on the interest and schedule of the student.
Ali is very attentive to the needs of her students and will work with you to find the right exercises and etudes to develop techniques in response to your unique needs. She is very flexible when working with scheduling!
