Overview:
Allison G, Clarinet Secondary instruments: viola, violin, flute, saxophone, oboe, percussion (especially keyboard percussion such as marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, and especially Latin percussion with emphasis on salsa), bag pipes, and piano.  I have been teaching privately for 27 years.  Prior to getting my undergraduate degree at The Ohio State University; where I studied with James Pyne. I studied music at Indiana University during the summers.  I also hold a Masters from Northern Kentucky University.  However, I have done post graduate work at University of Cincinnati, Cleveland State, and Kaplan University.  It is said, as a music teacher you get one great one in your life. I have been blessed to have five students following in her musical footsteps, she hopes the next one is you!
EXPERIENCE
I have been playing the clarinet for 33 years.    Although; clarinet is my primary instrument, I actually started my musical career on the viola and have been playing that for 34 years.   During the course of my career, I have had the unique experience of leading a bag pipe band.  I have also made a special emphasis on my studies in Latin percussion due to my background in Salsa music. I taught as a band director in El Paso , TX and Augusta, KY. This is the reason I am able to play many instrunemts.
METHODS USED
I have most students start with Essential Elements for fundamentals.  Then I progress to solo and duet repertoire when the time a student is able to grasp counterpoint and rhythm well.  Adult students can often move faster due to being able to understand the math behind music.  I also try to incorporate theory and history and culture with my lessons. For piano, I use Bastien for my younger students and Farber and Bastien for my older students. My method books for intermediate and advance can vary.
LESSON STYLE
To be a part a student's success in education is more than a dream come true. It is something special when the light bulb goes off. I have a lot to offer. I a thrilled to utilize skills to assist with establishing lasting relationships with my students. A student should progress at a pace they are comfortable with.  But, also should be challenged if she wants some kind of future or if they want to play just for the joy of music develop it accordingly. Also, I highly encourage parents in sit in on lessons so they can assist the student with practicing especially for younger students.
