I am currently a fourth year student at DePaul University and I will be going onto my fifth year at the school as I am double majoring in Music Education and Vocal Performance, and double minoring in Psychology and Community Service Studies. I am originally from Ukraine and immigrated to the United States in 2009. My passion for classical singing, and classical music in general, began early in my childhood, as the films I would watch as a child were set to classical music. I began my performance career in Ukraine, when I joined a touring musical group called “Neposedi”. Since I had immigrated to the United States, I have joined several bands and ensembles at churches and performed at private conferences and conventions. This past spring, I ranked third place in the NATS (National Association of Teachers of Singing) vocal competition. In the fall of 2021, I received the Muccianti Award from Casa Italia Chicago, In the Winter of 2021, I received the first place runner up Judges Award from Casa Italia as well.
I have had five years of music teaching experience and I am interested in the music education substitute position. I have had 11 years of performance experience in musical and opera productions as well as singing lead and playing keyboard in bands and ensembles. I have a passion for music and a desire to help youth, using music as the bridging vessel. No student walks into a school being a blank slate, so it is important to consider their backgrounds, musical and cultural, when finding teaching approaches and building upon the knowledge they have already acquired. As a music educator, I strive to create a community where every student is valued for their personal assets.
My methods are based in Suzuki as I am a strong believer that students musical capabilities can be developed regardless of their musical predispositions. For beginning students that have minimal background musical knowledge, I incorporate theory and aural skill trailing into the lessons to help the students learn to read their music and apply the theoretical and technical concepts learned in each class to the repertoire studied. Both my vocal and piano lessons typically focus on technique. Vocal students would also receive diction and acting coachings as needed to successfully perform their repertoire.
I believe that each student has something unique to bring to the table, and that students should feel that they are valued because of their cultural identities, not in spite of them. I also believe that music in itself can be used as a means through which the world can be impacted for good. Bringing students to a positive outlet such as this, can bring about passion within themselves, for both music and other issues in the world, music being the way they express this passion and use it to send a message. I believe that music, and art in general are vessels for change in themselves as forms of communication.
