Overview:
I have three passions in life: music, fashion, and technology. I often combine the three to add extra marketing and uniqueness. I started out, I guess, like many other kids wanting to play the saxophone because I saw a picture of John Coltrane holding one. A crazy thing happened while I was pursuing my musical goals. I was thrust into the fashion scene and became a well known urban designer in Chicago. This helped me find new paths to play my music especially since rap stars started wearing my brand. Because of my celebrity status as a clothing designer I was able to attract upscale Chicago clothier Bigsby and Kruthers who sponsored my Chicago Jazz musical tours. Also, accompanied by the great Chicago poet Malik Yusef, I got a chance to perform with legendary rapper Common on his Album "One Day It Will All Make Sense." In 2001, I was offered a job to teach at the Fashion Institute of Technology (still there). One of my greatest musical achievements living in New York has been studying Bebop Jazz with legendary pianist Barry Harris
EXPERIENCE
One of the greatest benefits that my students get from me is my ability to teach. I wrap the learning around each student's personality. This has a lot to do with my master's research around cognitive learning . I teach students based on their desires. For example, if a student is interested in being a fireman then the lesson plans should be built around being a fireman. My saxophone students can expect a systematic approach toward learning. Learning the basics is vital; approaching music as a science is important and can produce optimal learning outcomes. My teaching methods, can help any student become a better player if they are willing to practice. Moreover, my method can catapult a student to greatness - If that's a goal!
METHODS USED
I start out with the basics: Major Jazz Scales, Mixolydian Scales, and Minor Scales, Teaching students the importance of playing long tones is constantly enforced . Simultaneously, students learn how to outline the Blues, and transcribe solos. For more advance students, I teach jazz phrasing, intermediate jazz song outlining and jazz enclosures. Each student receives a cloud drive with songs, charts, demos and other lesson plans. Students that are really hungry can move along at their own pace.
LESSON STYLE
My saxophone students can expect a systematic approach toward learning. Learning the basics is vital; approaching music as a science is important to produce optimal learning outcomes. I provide a cloud drive. I give homework assignments, My method is about pushing the student to be as great as desired. My method can produce great players - My style is about progress, not just picking up the horn and wailing away, but utilizing the time efficiently. A big part of jazz is timing; the metronome is used frequently to help student play "in time'-
