I am a creative, passionate, well-rounded music instructor who strives to instill a love for music in all of my students. Growing up in a musical household with both my mother and my grandmother as music teachers, I have been fortunate enough to have had musical exposure throughout my life. In 2012, I received a Bachelor in Voice Performance Syracuse University. In May 2020, I received my K-12 music teaching certification as well as a Master of Music Education from Temple University. I enjoy any and all styles of music, as any music making is good music making!
For nearly ten years, I have been teaching private music lessons. However, throughout my experiences as a student and a performer, my teaching continues to grow and develop both in and out of the music classroom. With a diverse music education background including music directing musicals, vocal coaching, performing with vocal jazz ensembles, directing choirs, and performing in operas, I strive to share my musical diversity with my students. I also have a strong passion for world music in which I am constantly researching and discovering. I have taught in an elementary and high school setting within the Philadelphia School District, and have worked at several different lesson studios. I have experiences with many different populations of students and welcome any and all diversity into my studio!
As I continue to develop as an educator, my focus has moved towards a more student-centered learning process. Students learn musically in all different ways including visual, kinesthetic, aural, and oral modalities. It is up to the teacher to figure out in which ways a particular student learns best. In some cases, a method book such as the Bastien Method may be best and for others, a more free style of learning may work better. It is also crucial that I am open and willing to try new and innovative techniques that can enhance the student's learning experience, even if it is a learning process for myself!
With a student centered learning theory, my hope is that my students will become life-long music learners who hold a passion for the love and joy that music can bring to our everyday lives. The learning does not stop when the lesson ends! As a passionate and encouraging individual, I help my students to gain an appreciation for practicing rather than making it a chore. With such busy life-styles Americans hold, I understand that practice everyday is not always feasible. However, there are ways to engage in music making in everyday life, without focusing on a "practice schedule". For example, listening to a new singer on the way to school or work, or doing some vocal exercises while cleaning the house. Music making comes in many different shapes and forms and I believe that all music making is good music making!
Alyson is everything you want in a music teacher! Great with all ages and all levels of experience. From classical to jazz, to Pop to Rock, there isn't a genre or style she can't help you deliver. She is very well prepared for lessons and has an incredibly kind approach. Her skills and knowledge regarding her expertise combined with the way she translates that to the student is quite inspiring. I'd recommend her to anyone, Alyson is most certainly the real deal!
Alyson has been working with my seven year for about one month now. She's wonderful teaching younger kids music. She's very positive, upbeat and patient. She also has a well rounded approach.
