Bachelor Degree: Shenandoah University
I have been playing and competing with piano since I was 5 years old. My love for music led me to study at Shenandoah University for Music Therapy where I graduated with my Bachelors degree of Music Therapy with my major in piano and a minor in jazz piano. I've had the pleasure of working with students of all musical levels and I love being able to bring others the joy of music as I see it. I'm quite passionate about the music I play, and love to listen to live music as well. Nothing is like hearing a song live instead of from the radio.
I currently work at a school for special needs students teaching music. We work on goals set for them to achieve success each session. I also work with students outside of school teaching piano. My emphasis to my students is that music is something that can't be taken away once it is learned. It's a conversation starter, an outlet for people to blow off steam, and is something everyone loves to listen to. I've taught my students to know that learning and progressing should be fun and if it's not its a problem that needs to be fixed. Another thing is that if a student wants to learn a specific song, we can learn it.
When first starting with a student, I gage what their level of music is and go from there. With all my students regardless, we start off with Hanon exercises and scales. These are the fundamentals of piano. Music theory will also be applied as needed to help students learn music appropriately and efficiently. With beginners, we start with the John Thompson Piano Books so that students are getting the well rounded ins and outs of the piano. For students who are more intermediate, they may choose their own music. All lessons are created for each student's individual needs, and will always be fun and engaging.
In my time as a piano student, I've had 3 different teachers with very different styles. What worked for me was having a teacher sit in a chair beside me to be able to see everything and help me as I went. The music itself plays a huge role in that because if you like a song you're learning you will learn it faster and more efficiently than a song you don't like. With that being said, my lessons are always tailored to fit the needs and wants of the student so that we can maximize the results at the end of each lesson.
