I am not only a passionate and dedicated performer, but teacher as well. I love to share my knowledge and love of music with students of all ages. I have played music since the age of 4 on a variety of instruments, my main knowledge being in brass and piano. I try to do as many performance opportunities as I can so I can meet more musicians myself, connect with others, and find performance opportunities for my students. Getting my students involved in the community is one way to help many of them see what they can do with music outside of their home.
I began giving lessons in my undergraduate studies at the University of Iowa to beginner to intermediate horn, trumpet, and piano students. Encouraging the musical growth of young students was something I not only enjoy doing, but loved watching the results of. Helping develop a student's passion for something that you are also passionate about is my favorite part of teaching. I think it is important to combine classical, modern, and jazz.improv techniques in all my students. Improvisation may not be required for all performers, but it really pushes the players creativity and helps them understand music outside of their comfort box. I encourage my students to get out and perform as much as possible!
I think it is important for lessons to not only be instructional, but also engaging and fun. Being a great teacher is about learning from the student just as much as the student learning from you. It is impossible to be a great teacher without learning the student's interests, strengths, previous knowledge and background, and their goals in music. I like to introduce all types of music, because students may not know what they like or might be missing out on something they haven't tried before. Variety is so important because it stretches your comfort zone and ability!
Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a student develop a passion for music! It's important that each student progresses at their own pace. I encourage and push my students to learn, but also have an important balance between push from me, and drive from themselves. Students learn better when half of the push is from themselves rather than 100% from the teacher. I set realistic goals for my students, but also have them set their own goals so we can compare and come up with a plan together that works for both of us. By finding out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their needs.
