2011- Toured with the Sussex County Youth Orchestra in England and France
2013- performed at the Teen Arts Festival with the Sparta High School chamber group
Overview:
Hi, my name is Amanda and I am currently a Senior at The College of New Jersey. I have been playing the cello for the last 13 years and teaching the last 6. I am currently involved with The College of New Jersey orchestra and an on campus quartet but in the past I have been part of the Sussex County Youth Orchestra with whom I've had to opportunity to tour England and France with. I am an passionate and animated teacher who connects well with children and focuses on nurturing a passion for music.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching cello lessons sophomore year in high school and am excited to continue teaching in college. I like to focus not only on the technical aspects of cello playing, but endeavor to make the lessons enjoyable, especially for the younger students. I've had the pleasure of having many students with a wide range of skill levels, social skills, and personality, and have been successful at tailoring my lessons and teaching style to their needs. I find it easy to connect with my students because I went through the same things not too long ago!
METHODS USED
I usually begin by working through the Suzuki method books, and then from there try to branch out into other material depending on the student's skill. I'm always open to trying different songs and even encourage my students to find songs that they want to play. While working on different pieces, I'll also focus on techniques of holding the cello and the bow, things that I consider very important to correct and improve, especially at a young age. And I try to incorporate some small theory lessons here and there, just enough so that the student understands the why behind the how.
LESSON STYLE
More than anything else, I try to grow a love for the cello and music, because without a passion, lessons can be a drag (trust me, I know!). I try to incorporate some of the student's other interests into the lessons, ie. pop music, art, even science! I also place a lot of value on progressing at the student's own pace and understanding when a student doesn't really like a particular piece, not to spend too much time on it. Because of my age, I find it really easy to connect with my younger students and develop a strong teacher-student bond.

Amanda is talented and serious about the music, and yet unlike many serious teachers, she is able to connect with our 10-year-old daughter and make the lessons full of fun and laughter. We are very happy with what she's been doing, and have seen our daughter improve tremendously in only a few weeks!
