I am a soon-to-be music teacher who loves working with students and sharing my love of music! I began studying music in Chicago, Illinois in 2015 and am currently finishing my degree at University of Missouri. I plan to continue to get both my master and PhD in choral music education, though I have a strong focus in playing piano and accompanying. I have taught beginning and intermediate lessons the past several years, as well as accompanied ensembles and sang in many chorales simultaneously. I look forward to continuing sharing my love of music with future students!
My teaching experience began around the age of 15, when I taught 2 beginner students piano lessons. I then taught throughout high school and my first few years of college in the Chicago area through the Judson Community School of Music. I love to encourage consistent, short practice sessions for beginners and focus on theory and technique, as well as encourage music to be fun. If a student is eager, I encourage them to perform as well, even on the smallest of scales to gain experience and confidence!
I typically begin with Hal Leonard's books, levels 1-5. These are great and pair well with theory and scale techniques. I also enforce regular flashcards to memorize notes, markings, and terms. These also pair well with the books. As the students begin to grasp basic concepts, I introduce "fun" books that they may choose: for some, it is classical or pop, and for others, it is musical theatre. I also love allowing students to play music based on holidays they celebrate: it is always fun for a small family/friends concert!
I strongly encourage my students to work at their own pace! If they are driven, I love setting goals and progressing fast! If students want to play simply for fun or leisure, I allow them to take the process at their own pace and simply enjoy learning music! I also love to acknowledge progress and accomplishments, while constantly working to be better and craft one's skill. However, it is most important to tailor instruction to each individual student and their learning pace and interest. This is how music becomes achievable and enjoyable for each student!
