Overview:
My name is Amber, and I am a graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania and earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education, as well as my Bachelor of Fine Arts in Vocal Performance. In addition to directing the Crimson Youth Choir and teaching privately in the IUPCMS, I directed/arranged music for the IUP Crimson Chords, an elite all-female a capella jazz ensemble. Last fall, I also directed Homer-Center’s Musical Annie and worked on Marion Center’s Musical Marry Poppins. I performed the lead role of Rosalina in IUP’s production of Die Fledermaus and have been a part of other productions including Le nozze di figaro, Suor Angelica, Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, Guys and Dolls, Anything Goes and Godspell. I am also a first-place winner of the NATS Music Theatre competition, held at West Virginia University. I have just relocated to Chicago, IL to become a full-time music and voice teacher.
EXPERIENCE
Like most music teachers, my passions started with performing myself, and then using those experiences to educate my students. I have be a part of several operas, musicals, choirs, pop and Jazz ensembles, and each experience taught me tactics that I would not have learned anywhere else. I then paired my performing knowledge with my knowledge of education and with that I have successfully taught choirs, bands, vocal a capella ensembles, classrooms, musicals, pit orchestras and many many voice and piano students from ages 5-63!
METHODS USED
While instructing private voice students, I teach the functional approach to singing. This mindset allows the vocalist to focus on singing freely in all genres. I believe it is important to not only teach a wide variety of repertoire, but to also inform my students on vocal health. Along with a functional approach to the voice, I promote a safe and welcoming environment to make music in. If a student does not feel comfortable in the space they are in, then they will not perform to their fullest potential and I would not have completed my job. With some instruction, anyone can sing, and I provide the tools necessary to do so.
LESSON STYLE
Praise, suggestion, praise is a big part of any teaching situation I enter. I believe that it is crucial to a student’s learning to be in a safe and positive environment. As soon as they feel uncomfortable or as if it is not okay for them to be themselves, the productivity goes down and they are not able to accomplish things to their fullest potential. I also strive to influence students in not just education, but in life as well. There are so many opportunities to be creative and there are also chances to not only enhance the knowledge of a student, but also to teach them how to appropriately deal with anything that comes their way. I also believe that if you are working in an educational environment whatsoever, you must be a positive role model. Students latch on so easily to adults, especially someone that they admire, so in order to guarantee their success later on in life, they must have the appropriate role models in which to do so.
