Innovative Teacher Award-Carver Junior High

Overview:

Hello music friends! I am a passionate and dedicated music instructor specializing in viola, violin and cello. I have a Master degree in Music and 10+ years orchestra teaching experience. As a mom of two, I now teach private music lessons from home both virtually and in person. I am an active performing Violist and regularly perform with the Spartanburg Philharmonic Orchestra and serve on my church worship team at Grace Church. I am also an active adjudicator for state sponsored orchestra events.

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons in my church's music academy. I later became the director of Daystar Music and Arts Academy. Upon graduating from UNCG, I moved to South Carolina for my first orchestra teaching position. I continued teaching public school orchestra for 10+ years until I became a mom of two. I then transitioned to running a music studio from home teaching violin, viola and cello students. I love teaching students individually and giving them specific instruction to meet their learning needs. I'm always looking to bring on new students to inspire and share my love of music with!

METHODS USED

I love teaching private string lessons from a classical approach. I use the Essential Elements method books along with solo literature from the Suzuki books. My experienced students study 3 octave scales, etudes and contrasting solo literature chosen to meet their specific level. In addition to traditional technique building and repertoire, I love to incorporate music the students are interested in. I often include Disney music, pop tunes, worship music, or music specifically requested by the student.

LESSON STYLE

I love teaching individual lessons and watching my students grow and develop as a musician. I specifically create lesson plans and use teaching methods to meet each student's needs. I set realist and attainable goals while also pushing my students to reach the next level. I keep my students motivated and encouraged while giving them a desire to learn more. I try to find out what inspires each student, what their musical goals, and what they hope to achieve through their music studies. I then plan and implement a curriculum to fit their needs.

Mrs. Amber is a super cool teacher and has helped me with many hard pieces of music. She is encouraging and helpful, and helps me get a better tone and bigger sound out of my instrument. She is dedicated and you can tell she loves to play and teach. I’ve been with her at least four years and plan to continue.
