BA in Music (Vocal and Bassoon emphasis) from Ohio Northern University, MEd in Intervention Specialist (Mild/Moderate) from Wright State University, 12/2015
Overview:
I am both an avid teacher and an avid performer. In addition to my teaching experience, I have performed in concerts across the US, as well as throughout Europe. I bring a wide variety of performing practices into my lessons, having experience in both vocal and instrumental performance and teaching, as well as involvement in over 80 theatrical productions. My background in Special Education brings a unique approach to my music education, and I would love to adapt my lessons to meet the individual needs of my students. A jack of all trades, I have taught and performed as a vocalist, pianist, and a wide variety of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
EXPERIENCE
I have taught band, choir, and theater in the public schools for four years, and have been teaching Special Education for the last five years. My background as a Special Education teacher has added a unique aspect to my teaching style, and I work incredibly well with students of all ability levels. If your child has some unique learning challenges, I am more than happy to partner with your family to develop an individual plan for learning music. I continue to be active in local community events, and play in the pit orchestras for local school programs.
METHODS USED
My experience in both music education and special education gives me the insight into adapting lesson material to the individual student, as no two students are alike in their learning styles! I work with the needs and goals of the individual student, and incorporates a wide variety of teaching styles into my lessons. For my younger piano students, I use the Bastien piano series, and I like to use the Alfred Adult Beginner series for my beginning students that are late middle school and older. For vocal students, I will work with your style of choice, but I always encourage my students to explore the wide variety of music that is available for voice!
LESSON STYLE
My lesson styles are geared towards the end goals of the students. As not all students will have the desire to become professional musicians, the ultimate goal is to build lifelong lovers of the arts...and if the student decides that music is a career, then the lessons are geared accordingly. For younger children, the ultimate goal is that their love of the music and instrument will spark their desire for practice and further learning, but that they ENJOY music as an art and experience first.
