MM, Chicago College of the Performing Arts at Roosevelt Univ., Voice Performance BM, Univ. of Colorado Boulder, Voice Performance
Overview:
Hey there! I'm a private voice and piano teacher, actor, and singer performing profressionally in both musical theatre and opera. I have both an undergraduate degree in Voice Performance from the University of Colorado (Boulder), and masters degrees in the same from the Chicago College of Performing Arts. I have have students who range from beginners, to stars at the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Lun Tha in their upcoming production of "The King and I" with Kate Baldwin), and the National Tour of "The Wizard of Oz" (as Dorothy). I am currently working at FreeFall theatre in St. Petersburg in their production of "Sondheim on Sondheim."
EXPERIENCE
As a Teacher: I have operated my own private studio in New York City for the last 6 years. As a performer I have received rave reviews from the New York Post, performed with the Utah Festival Opera Company, the Powerhouse Theatre (directed Mark Brokaw, of Broadway's "Cinderella"), Colorado Light Opera, the dell'Arte Opera Ensemble, the freeFall Theatre, and the Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, and am represented by Gregg Baker Management.
METHODS USED
Voice: First 40-60% of each lesson: Voice Building and Technique (Working on the student's range, placement, support, alignment, and vowel clarity). Theory and sightreading is introduced on day-one, and emphasized in every lesson going forward. Last 40% of each lesson: Repertoire (With every student, I ask that YOU pick one song that you want to sing, in any genre of your choice, and I will in turn supply you with a piece that both suits you, but will challenge you as well. Often, the song is in a different genre entirely!) Piano: I generally teach from the Alfred Beginning Piano series, and the Hanon book of 60 exercises, to build strength and dexterity in the fingers. Theory and sightreading is introduced on day-one, and emphasized in every lesson going forward. I will always recommend additional books that are tailored to your interests -- there are a few blues fakebooks I love to recommend, for example, as well as classical etudes, improv books, and more, all to help round out your education. In the last portion, we work on repertoire. This always includes one song of your choosing in any style you wish, and one of my choosing, to help build a particular skill or broaden your horizons musically.
LESSON STYLE
Technique is certainly at the centerpiece of my teaching, for both voice and piano. You are your instrument, and training your body to produce music easily and efficiently is the primary goal. But I by no means think Classical music is the only genre of music a student should study. Both my voice and piano students are pushed to explore their musical boundaries, and learn how to play and sing a large variety of styles, from rock, to pop, jazz, and theatre. I love what I do, so every lesson is a ton of fun. Can't wait to meet you!
