BA, University of California Los Angeles(UCLA), Piano Performance
Awards:
1998-Sonata/Sonatina Competition Senor Division (Long Beach MTAC) First Place
Overview:
I teach with patience and encouragement, and have strong experience teaching beginners- early advanced levels. I graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts in Piano Performance, and have taught students in various locations, including Los Angeles, Diamond Bar, and Seoul. I have taught for Yamaha Music school, private music schools, and have performed on the piano for over a decade. I believe that music is a universal language that can be learned and appreciated by everyone, and I would love to share in this endeavor with my students.
EXPERIENCE
I began my career teaching privately in Beverly Hills in 2004, and also worked with the Yamaha Music school (Los Angeles branch) in 2005. In addition to teaching beginners, I also trained students for city competitions and recitals. A few years later, I was able to collaborate with SOMA music school in Diamond Bar and taught piano performance to students of various abilities. In 2009, I relocated to Korea temporarily and worked for the Yamaha Music school (Seoul branch), teaching musical development for younger children as well as giving private lessons to beginner-intermediate level students. I have continued to perform piano for various organizations and functions. I focus on development, and strive for students to enjoy learning piano through classical methods. In addition, I like to teach students basic methods through music that is interesting to the students. Because each student is unique, I am adaptable to the level, learning rate, and style that my students have. I want my students to learn music and find their own sense of accomplishment when they achieve a level or learn how to play a song that they chose.
METHODS USED
The development of the basic skills that are required to lay a foundation for playing the piano is an essential part of teaching. Because repetition, listening to music, and practice can be challenging for some students, I try to incorporate modern music or songs that students like to practice the fundamentals. Since teaching beginners/intermediate, and children/adults require different methods, I first assess abilities and potential, as well as learn about what a student's goals are for learning piano. Next, we will collaborate on creating a lesson plan that works with the student's schedule and level. Eventually, through improvement, students will accomplish their goals.
LESSON STYLE
Students (and parents of students) often have goals for learning piano. As an instructor, my job is to assist and encourage students to achieve these goals. Whether its to learn basic chords and simple songs, or to master certain complex musical pieces for a recital, I am eager to work with students to find out the best methods to improve and progress towards achieving their goals. When students show diligence, passion, and a drive to learn, my own excitement and passion to teach is even more stoked. However, I do also realize that some students do not always reflect these traits all the time, so I incorporate different methodologies to encourage and bring out the best in my students.
