I love music and playing the piano and seek to convey my enthusiasm to beginner or intermediate level students while also being strict and detail oriented to develop good habits for maximal expression and best results. I try to bring out what is unique in each student and help fulfill their personal goals. I have been playing piano for 50 years and it has enriched my life so much that I want to give this gift to the next generation. I see teaching piano as a way of giving from my best self to the world and enabling other students to experience the same joy that I have through music.
My teaching background has focused on tutoring in science and math. I have also done some substitute teaching at the middle school level. I am new to piano teaching but that is not necessarily a drawback because I am fresh with lots of enthusiasm and I like to really think about helping my students. I want to combine my love and knowledge of music with my successful teaching skills in science and math to create a new career which uses my best self. I have had great success in science and math tutoring helping students at all levels and leaving them with an enjoyment of the subject they did not think possible and I would like to do that in the context of piano education also.
I will start with a free assessment of the students level likes and dislikes and then devise a program suited to them. I will use a variety of materials and my own knowledge to guide the student through the rudiments while making the lesson fun and rewarding. I will include sight reading and all that entails, rhythmic and ear training exercises, listening and singing even though this is a piano lesson. I think all musical skills should be introduced together so the student not only learns to play piano but comes away with important musical skills that will serve them regardless of what instrument they may eventually master.
I am very encouraging and enthusiastic but at the same time I am very alert to the details of how the student is performing and progressing. I am very gentle and always try to just suggest a better way if I see a problem rather than criticizing. I believe piano lessons should be an enjoyable experience and don’t push for required practice amounts or exercises that are not musical. I try to integrate piano study into the larger context of musicianship and see the ultimate goal to be creating an abiding love for music.
