Bachelor’s of Instrumental Music Education, P-12, Troy University, Flute Performance
Troy University Symphony Band Sound of the South Marching Band, 4 years Troy Symphony Orchestra
I love kids and music and decided to combine the two. Piano lessons from fourth grade through high school furthered my love for instruments. I played flute and piccolo through high school and then graduated with my Bachelor’s of Instrumental Music Education from Troy in 2005. I then worked for several years with Camp Victory in various capacities, including music. Now I teach private lessons through Encore! Fine Arts Studio as well as Musika and elsewhere. I have performed with many bands and orchestras associated with Troy School of Music as well as at weddings and other events. I look forward to working with you or your child.
With a teacher-mom, I believe my teaching experience started as soon as I could wrangle the attention of my little sister or stuffed animals. Officially I did some tutoring and a pre-teacher program in high school, along with some volunteering at after school programs. I also tutored and taught private lessons while in college. In my student teaching semester, I taught P-12 music classes including band and music appreciation. After college I spent ten years with a Christian camping organization where I taught as well. For the past three years I have taught music lessons at a local studio, with an average of 20 students a year.
I like to start where the student is. For my youngest students, we begin with the basics of counting and the music alphabet. For older students and adults, I assess prior knowledge and go from there. i like to have the students help me create up to three goals for the semester or year so that we can have something specific to aim for and measure. I use books, apps, flashcards, and other resources in my teaching. My main goal is to instill in the student the necessity for daily practice and a love for music and continuous learning.
My teaching style includes positive reinforcement, making and achieving small measurable goals that lead to big measurable goals, and teaching and instilling correct daily practice methods. I encourage each student to do their best each day and push through the difficult places. When something is too difficult for a student, I break it down into smaller, more understandable pieces, or change tactics to a different subject or piece. I use many resources and try to differentiate activities to keep students engaged and learning. I also like to ask students what helps them.
