It has always been my desire to help others and I find that teaching music is the best way! Music have so much positive benefits and I have seen firsthand on what music education can do for students. I want to improve student's live through music. I am currently finishing my Bachelor of Music in Keyboard Performance at Towson University where I study piano and harpsichord with professors with an extensive performance history. Besides piano and harpsichord, I also play violin, organ, and accordion with local musicians.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching piano when my mentor gave me several opportunities to teach her students and she guided me through the art of piano pedagogy. I began teaching independently after I attended community college in order to pursue a career in music. I encountered students with a variety of learning styles, which allowed me to discover how to be flexible with my teaching style in order to fit the student's needs. I like to give students music from a variety of styles including classical, avant-garde, renaissance, pop, film/video game, jazz, blues, and latin. I make sure that music becomes an enjoyable experience!
METHODS USED
For children under the age of 6, I start with Music for Little Mozart, which is a fantastic introduction to music and piano playing. For children older than 6, I generally start with Bastion's Piano Basics because the music is very engaging and the music gradually increases in difficulty. I also add in music outside the method book in order to provide music that interest them and to focus on specific challenges. Older students recieve music based on their goals and personal interest, but I like to use Alfred Basic Adult Piano course to introduce them to the piano. Even though I incorporate method books, these are merely a way to provide music that grows with the student while I add in other music that is appropriate to their level.
LESSON STYLE
When I teach, I adapt to the student's learning style. Every student have a unique way of learning and I really enjoy the challenge of finding the student's learning style! I always make piano lessons fun while encouraging students to improve and challenge themselves. I guide my students through every step and help them overcome any obstacle in the music. I want to show students that anything is possible through hardwork and persistence. Most importantly, music should be an enjoyable experience for everyone!
