Overview:
I was born and raised in Australia. I graduated from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2000, and have since performed in a number of musicals and theatre productions in Oz, including Oklahoma, Les Miserables and The Vagina Monologues (2007 ITA Best Actress Award). As a critically acclaimed cabaret performer, I toured the cabaret and festival circuits in Melbourne, Sydney and Perth before moving to NYC last year. I am an Alumni of the International Cabaret Conference at Yale, won last year’s Annual Broadway Spring Festival Shana Farr Cabaret Competition and have since performed solo cabarets at the Metropolitan Room and The Duplex.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to the mid 2000's when I began teaching children's musical theater classes for various organisations, such as Vogue Entertainment, Barking Gecko Theatre Company, The Song Room and Majkidz, in my hometown of Perth, Western Australia. I also began teaching private lessons to 8-16 year olds, focusing mainly on musical theater and classical repertoire. As a cabaret performer, I also have experience singing pop, folk and jazz repertoire, so am also comfortable teaching these styles. Although I have taught mainly children and young people, I would be happy to teach beginner adults up to age 30.
METHODS USED
I am classically trained, so my teaching methods are in line with the classical method. For all beginner students, we work on breath control and tone to start before concentrating on song repertoire. Once the student is comfortable and producing good sound, we then start to look at material suited the student's voice. I try to keep lessons fun and engaging, whilst also making sure good technique is being harnessed. Each student has a custom lesson plan, and I encourage students to practice as much as possible.
LESSON STYLE
I like to promote a positive and encouraging atmosphere, whilst also providing constructive feedback during lessons. If there is something a student is having difficulty with, I look at various ways in which we can work to improve the situation. I like to keep lessons fun and engaging but am also very passionate and serious about singing, so my style is a healthy mix between the two. My lessons start with breathing exercises, scales and vocal exercises and then we focus on song repertoire and performance skills. I create lessons designed to meet a student's needs and wants.
