Hello! I am a Colombian-American composer and flutist from the San Francisco Bay Area with a Bachelor of Music degree in Composition from San Jose State University. I have been working as a freelance musician for about 5 years. As a performer, I play just about anything and enjoy challenging myself with new repertoire, I particularly like playing Romantic or Modern music! I've had so many opportunities to perform with various chamber groups through an organization called Chamber Music Silicon Valley, and have traveled to many places in California and outside of the United States to perform and teach. As a composer, I love writing electronic or electroacoustic pieces and experimenting with different sound worlds. I would very happy to teach flute, piano, composition, or beginning sound recording! :)
I have been given so many opportunities to teach students of various ages. I was an assistant instructor for San Jose State's Summer Flute Institute, which involved giving private lessons, teaching beginner-level flute classes, coaching an intermediate chamber group, and judging a advanced-level performance competition. I've also had the chance to travel to Tijuana, Mexico as an assistant instructor for a summer Festival called Opera de Tijuana's Opera en la Calle. During this residency I was able to give private woodwind lessons to beginners-intermediate players, conduct, and co-lead wind ensemble rehearsals. Since graduating San Jose State University in 2023, where I worked as a music theory tutor for all undergraduate theory classes, from beginning theory through advanced counterpoint and orchestration; I have also started teaching music theory, composition, and sound recording remotely to all levels in my own studio. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and find the process of it very fulfilling and make sure that the student feels equally fulfilled and proud of themselves after every lesson. I am always happy to teach anyone who is curious about starting it out or to those that would like some coaching to hone their skills!
For beginning students in flute and piano, I use Trevor Wye flute books and Alfred piano books, respectively. These books cover fundamentals and hand technique and once that is learned and internalized, then I will introduce more solo or accompanied repertoire that they would eventually perform in a recital. For beginning composition students (which are taught remotely on Zoom), I will go over different "lectures" about fundamental music theory and integrate short composition assignments that go according to what was learned in the lesson. Afterwards, the lessons will primarily focus on larger compositions that we will analyze and workshop during the lesson. I like to navigate and plan lessons according to what the student's goals are and go from there, so that we can work towards that larger goal together.
Learning about music involves so much more than technique or scales, but also relies so much on their emotions and mindset. I want to prioritize their own independence within these lessons in regards to choosing their own repertoire or experimenting with their own compositional style so that they can embrace how liberating and fun learning about music and being creative can be, rather than seeing it as a chore! I also want to make sure that their musical journey is built with the right mindset - a lot of the time there is unnecessary toxic, competitive energy within other musicians which defeats the whole purpose of inspirational collaboration that can come from playing music with others. I would do this by setting goals tailored to them, their process, and their energy towards music. Establishing healthy routines such as positive affirmations, acknowledgements of their accomplishments, etc. can allow them to be more comfortable expressing themselves, which is something I value so much!
