Overview:
I am an enthusiastic music teacher focusing on oboe and English horn. I studied at and graduated from Interlochen Arts Academy. I was accepted with scholarships to the University of Arizona and attended as an oboe performance major. I have had master classes with many significant figures in the oboe world including but not limited to: Elaine Douvas - principle oboist with the NY Metropolitan Opera, Carolyn Hove - English hornist with the LA Philharmonic. In my personal studies I received intense training in proper embouchure, Alexander technique, circular breathing, vibrato techniques, and reed making.
EXPERIENCE
I played with the Musician's Workshop orchestra in Temecula, CA while in high school. The orchestra was a beginner program and I joined to play as a mentor. I enjoyed mentoring the younger players in the group and did some x22mini lessonsx22 during our playing breaks with some of the wind musicians. This began my love of teaching. I did an apprenticeship in 2008 with the Master Musican in Murrieta CA to learn musical instrument repair, and taught music lessons with them to beginners. I have taught lessons intermittently since.
METHODS USED
For beginning oboists I typically start with the Gekeler Method for Oboe. Once a student has moved passed the basics the fun begins with Ferling Etudes, the Barret Oboe Method, and the Vade Mecum! There is a wide variety of solos, sonatas, and concertos available for study between these method books intended solely for oboists. They also include duets that are fun to play together, and repertoir for the English horn as well.
LESSON STYLE
One of my teachers told me, x22Practice does not make perfect, practice makes permanent!x22 I focus not just on technique and repertoire, but how to practice properly. Proper practice helps a student to learn and grow at home after a lesson. Imparting a student with the proper fundamentals to learn with is important to me. (From the perspective of someone who had to un-learn many bad habits upon acceptance as an oboe performance major.)
