My journey as a violin and viola instructor has spanned across diverse environments and cultures, spanning over two decades. My teaching odyssey commenced during my college years, blossoming into a thriving part-time endeavor eight years ago. For the past five years, my home studio has served as the vibrant backdrop for countless musical journeys. Guiding students towards a profound love for the violin and viola is at the core of my teaching philosophy. I firmly believe that instilling a sense of discipline and regularity in practice lays the foundation for success, especially for younger students. My approach harmoniously blends classical and contemporary music to engage and motivate learners. After all, if students aren't reveling in their lessons, my mission remains incomplete. In addition to honing their instrumental skills, I encourage my students to participate in competitions and recitals, fostering a sense of accomplishment and motivation. I firmly believe that music education extends beyond the technicalities, encompassing creativity and self-expression. My journey has taken me from Shanghai, China, to various parts of the world, including Germany and Taiwan, enriching my teaching repertoire and enhancing my ability to connect with students from diverse backgrounds. Here are the key methods and practices I employ: Tailored Curriculum: I believe in customizing lesson plans to suit each student's unique needs, goals, and interests. Whether it's a young beginner or an advanced adult student, I adapt my teaching materials and repertoire selection accordingly. Foundational Skills: I prioritize the development of fundamental skills, including proper posture, bowing technique, finger placement, and intonation. These basics form the bedrock upon which students can build their musical abilities. Repertoire Diversity: I introduce students to a wide range of musical genres, from classical to contemporary, to keep lessons engaging and inspire a love for music. I incorporate solo repertoire, ensemble playing, and even student compositions when appropriate. Suzuki and Hans’ Viola Method: For beginners, I often start with the Suzuki method, which emphasizes ear training and gradual progression. Additionally, I've developed my own teaching materials, the "Hans’ Viola Method," to provide a structured and comprehensive approach to learning the viola. Scale Mastery: Scales are essential for developing technique and understanding music theory. I place a strong emphasis on scale practice and offer my nine-book series on Violin Scales to help students master this vital aspect of playing. Performance Opportunities: I encourage students to participate in recitals, competitions, and ensemble performances to build confidence and stage presence. These experiences are crucial for their musical growth. Effective Communication: I maintain open communication channels with parents and students to ensure everyone is informed about progress, goals, and practice strategies.
