Hello whoever you are, I am Andreas. I come from Sweden and live in San Fernando Valley, CA (Los Angeles). I started playing the drums at the age of 5 and played in bars when I was in my young teens. At the age of 16, I won first place the annual Swedish Championships in Drums. Quite an interesting concept, no? Next year, I won it all again.
All through my mid-teens, I attended a very unique Swedish music conservatory, maybe one of the very finest in our country, called "Music Factory". This school has now grown to be the birthplace of many great young Swedish musicians, included myself. Already working on pro-gigs in Sweden, I made a different choice than most of my friends. Instead I decided to move, by myself, from Sweden to Los Angeles and become a professional drummer.
When I moved to LA, I was in dire need to get a gig. Let me tell you. It wasn't easy, but I did end up landing a gig with Lady Gaga, one summer in 2009. Since, I have played for multiple different artists, on multiple major record labels. I have also worked with some of the world's leading producers, the men behind songs you hear every day on the radio, as a studio drummer and/or bass player. Artists ranging from Aly & AJ on Disney Channel to spaced-out mixed symphonic electronica with Paul Oakenfold, the English DJ legend. Though my time so far in LA, I have had the chance to aquaint myself with many other backing band musicians, for other artists or shows, from lead-guitarist Rafael Moreira (NBC The Voice, Pink, Christina Aguilera) and the guys gigging with Chris Cornell, to the younger rhythm section for Macy Gray.
My teaching experience goes back to my early/mid-teens, when I used to secretly be asked to sub for my drum teacher at the music school I was attending. I had his students, all older than me! We had such a great time and I am very lucky to have had such great teachers myself. All along my professional career, I have always had private students from time to time. In later years, I came to appreciate teaching more, because I learn a lot from my students as well. I teach drums out of my home studio in Van Nuys, CA. It is a private studio space in a friendly environment. Here I have 2 drum sets I can play with. I have happy students and we work on all kinds of different things. One of my drum students didn't even know how to play when she started! And now she is playing along with a Led Zeppelin track like it's no one's business. This encourages me to keep going and we have a great time working parts and fills out. Other students come to me with a specific question in mind and might was to learn some new technique they've heard about. I can explain in the simplest way the best lesson to work on, for just about anything, for any level of student, from beginner to advanced.
As I have a cool studio to teach out of, this is where my students usually come. It happens that I go to their house occasionally, in case the student is young. Otherwise, I believe the student would benefit out of being in my music studio. It's a step into the real world. The vibe is good and there are 2 drum sets ready to go! I am easy-going compared to some other teaching approaches. I am not following any style of system, other than the best of what I have picked up myself, along the way. And I have explored many different systems of drumming, both theoretically and practically, in professional situations. I usually don't refer to any specific published drum books and use my own photo copied exercises and material I have collected over the years. I will normally find just the right exercise and pass it on to my students and spend some time with them working it out. Introduce something new each lesson, and juggle the "lessons" a little, until they settle. We sometimes work on grooves that are on songs the student likes, and would like to learn to play. I will break the groove apart and go over it together with the students. Rudiments and hand technique are important to have. There is a metronome & PA sound system, we can work in any tempos, with snare drums. Bass drum technique is popular and I teach my own approach to my students. It's important to find the balance.
Nice, friendly and patient. The most important part of the lesson is the state of mind. For anyone, going to a lesson should be an event to look forward to, nothing else. So, I try to make the drummer in everyone "go to work", even though I take the easy approach. And I love it when the students feel like they get it.
