UNT undergraduate degree in Arts and Science with an emphasis in Music Education.
I am a University of North Texas graduate. I studied with Jim Riggs and Dr. Eric Nestler and played in the top lab bands and classical ensembles while attending school. I later moved to NYC where I started my professional playing career. I lived there for 14 years playing with several music ensembles and studied with Bill Blount on clarinet and Lorrie Glaze on piano. I played on Broadway musicals like Avenue Q and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. I also have played for the longest running cabaret act in NYC at the Carnegie Club as well as jazz clubs such as Birdland and Minton's Playhouse among others.
Music instructor with 20 years experience. I have also played professionally for over 20 years in NYC on Broadway as well as several major halls and clubs across the globe. My main focus now as an older musician is educating all age groups interested in music and helping them succeed. I've taught in Texas and NYC public schools. My students have gone on to succeed in their auditions for district, region and state. Also, I have worked with organizations that help lower income families receive music lessons.
Each student is unique so I start out with seeing where they are and we go from there. If I have a student that is needing more help than usual I will help the student understand things in a way that is helpful for them. Students that have more experience, I use some of the method books that most school use such as Essential Elements for Band, Rubank method books, as well as new material customized for students. I also like to keep lessons fun and enjoyable while learning how to play and become a better musician.
My approach to lessons is one that is customized to the student. I don't believe in a one size fits all method. I use the same material and books that have helped me improve as well as customizable methods for each student. These methods include: learning how to process information effectively, how to retain the information and also how to excecute that information at any moment. I also help with the psychology of music learning and performing which is often overlooked. I always strive to help my students achieve the best they can be.
