2009-2011: Texas All State Band, Clarinet, 7th chair
Overview:
I am very musically and artistically motivated in most aspects of my life. I also work in film and theatre. I graduated from high school in Texas in 2011 where I maintained a status of one of the best high school clarinet players in the state. I went to college for undergraduate and graduate degrees in theatre, but I continued to take music lessons and play in various groups. I love sharing my experience with those who are eager to learn and find joy in the process of learning an instrument. It can be one of the most rewarding experiences.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience begins in graduate school in San Diego. I spent most of high school and college developing my own skills. I have taught ages ranging from 10-25. I think it is important for teachers in an artistic field to have experience teaching outside their focus in order to learn more about how they teach. In graduate school, I taught a total of 6 undergraduate courses in Acting and Public Speaking. Because of that I am now able to hone in my teaching style and focus on students ore productively.
METHODS USED
Most of my experiences teaching music has been with beginners or intermediate players. Initially, I find it so helpful to foster the student's prime interest in music- figuring out with them what it is that makes them play, or what will keep them playing when they don't even have a reason to. I love giving students things to listen to or watch and then having them show me the same thing. I then move into basics such as Essential Elements, scales, endurance, etc. while assessing how quickly we will be able to move. Precision, patience, fundamentals, and a little bit of abandon is very important to me.
LESSON STYLE
I like to be completely transparent about the lessons no matter what age the student is. Giving them a big picture is important. Letting them know what you want to accomplish and what you will achieve with them is important. But it is also vital they understand how much practice it will actually take to accomplish our goals. I will absolutely cover all the basics, challenging the student incrementally as I learn more about where they are at. But something I pride myself on is always taking about something else happening in the student's life. What sports they're playing? What tv are they watching? Who are their friends? What do they like about life? Things like that will help develop trust and reliability for future musical risks and the failure necessary in the process.
