Overview:
Welcome to my profile. My name is Andrew and I am primarily a self-trained musician and performer of over 20 years. I began playing piano at age 5, guitar at age 7, drums and bass at age 16, and have been performing in bands since age 14. I've also become a collector of guitars and other instruments and musical equipment. I have had very minmal instruction of my own over the years however what I have been taught has been invaluable to me. In 2005 I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston for their summer program. This was an eye-opening experience as I learned various techniques and styles from some very talented and well-known musicians. I studied music theory and jazz improvisation at Newtown High School in Sandy Hook, CT before going on to obtain my B.S. in Justice and Law Administration from WCSU, graduating in 2013 (the backup plan every family member suggested). Over the years I have been in many bands that include the following styles of music: Folk, Rock, Metal, Punk, and Reggae. I have completed 2 solo albums of my own work and since 2008 I've done all my own recordings. Currently I play guitar in the punk band Two Fisted Law.
EXPERIENCE
Music has always been my passion. I have an affinity for guitar in particular and love watching people achieve the satisfaction of perfecting their chosen instrument. I find it incredibly rewarding to see students practice and perfect techniques they want to be able to play. In 2003 I joined the Rock On America program at East Coast Music Mall as a student. The director's objective was to teach students to perform as a group in order to hold annual concerts to raise money for various charities (the first of which being a 9/11 victims fund). Some time in 2006 I was asked by the director to become his assistant and began taking on groups of my own. In 2007 I also joined ECMM as a sales associate and apprentice luthier in their shop, selling and working on guitars and other instruments. It was unfortunate that ECMM closed in 2009 after 33 years. Working at East Coast was a great experience for me and something I will always cherish. What I loved most about the ROA program was that as I transitioned from a student to a teacher, I adopted the same teaching style as my mentor: let the students choose what they want to learn and help them to learn and perfect it.
METHODS USED
My methods are customized to each student's individual needs, skills, and interests. Before each lesson a student and I will go over what their goals are. During the lesson we will discuss their strengths and weaknesses, what they can do and what they need to improve upon and practice what they've chosen to learn. At the end of the lesson we will review what we've gone over and plan accordingly for the following lesson.
LESSON STYLE
My mother is a math teacher and I've always said her most difficult 4 students were myself and my 3 brothers. I have a 5 year old son who has just started playing guitar and am thinking the same of him. What my son and I have learned from each other though is patience. As I teach him, I've learned to have patience as he progresses. As he learns, he's developed patience with me being his father and his teacher. He understands just like I did at his age that with practice comes perfection and that nothing will happen in a day. In time my students will achieve exactly what they want from my lessons. I believe we are all life-long students. I'm still a student of music myself, because there are always new things to learn. Throughout the course of my lessons, I hope to pass on what I've learned to my students so that they may do the same in the future.
