I am a dedicated music educator focused on innovative ways to engage my students in there learning while utilizing modern technology and proven pedagogical methods to improve my students musical abilities. I graduated from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin with a Bachelors in Music Education focusing on vocal and general music. I have been performing with bands around the Chicagoland area for many years as a vocalist and as a saxophonist. I have performed around the world including in Carnegie Hall twice. I live in DeKalb, Illinois with my wife, Catherine, and my dog, Sawyer.
I have had a desire to be an educator since I was in second grade. The first music ensemble I directed was a men's choir at Huntley High School in Huntley, Illinois. I proceeded to direct worship choirs and bands at Carthage College for my four years at Carthage. After Carthage I became the music teacher at Fratt Elementary School in Racine, Wisconsin where I taught general music and directed the annual fourth and fifth grade musical. I taught at Fratt for two years. This year I became one of the choir directors at Auburn High School and West Middle School in Rockford, Illinois where I am part of the Creative and Performing Arts Academy. I have a desire to work with students to improve there skills and make them musicians for life.
When creating lesson plans for classes or for individual lessons, I customize and design the lessons to fit the needs of the students. I always interview the students and set goals to know where they want to go so that all of our work is geared towards there individual success and improvement. I utilize various methods books depending on the students abilities. I also heavily utilize the Kodaly method and the Orff Method when teaching. Students who are actively engaged in music have a higher success of improving and loving music.
The moment when a students finally understands a difficult concept, succeeds at a performance, masters a new technique, or has an amazing breakthrough is why I teach. I love to see the joy in the students faces and see how proud they are when they accomplish the tasks at hand. I like to reward and acknowledge successes because a student who feels successful has a higher chance of being successful. Every student requires a different approach so their lessons are tailored towards their individuals needs.
