I've been playing music for many years but playing the drums is something I cannot preach enough about. I have the privilege to play music in a band all over the country and it is has been a dream of mine since I was very young. Because of this, I want to share to other students that you can achieve anything you want in life if you put in a lot of hard work and never give up.
I started playing in band program at Northeastern State University when I was a senior in High School until I graduated college (2014-2019). I've played in ensembles such as; Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and the Marching Band (Snare).
My teaching experience started back in High School when I was section leader in the marching band. I officially started teaching when I was 18 at a local music store in Tahlequah, OK. That's when my whole world changed. I went from helping other high school peers to teaching kids between the ages of 8-12. It is truly rewarding bringing the joy of drums into young kids lives.
My father taught me drums when I grew up and the one thing he constantly preached was to be versatile. He started me off on the drum kit, then we added percussion when I got to middle school and marching snare drum from middle to high school. At a young age, I was exposed to practicing different percussion instruments all the time. I've been able to apply percussion knowledge to drum set, marching snare drum etc. It's important that a student is able to play more than a single percussion instrument or if they are a drum set player, to not be limited to a single genre. I want to motivate students to practice and achieve great things in music. I'm always looking to bring on students of all ages!
For beginning students, I usually start with technique and rudiments with reading. Once the student begins to learn a few rudiments and has correct technique we will start working on solo snare drum reading or playing to a music track if they are a drum set player. I believe reading music is essential to becoming a strong musician so this is something I require all of my students to learn. For most students, I try and assess what the student wants to learn or what they're goals are and where their playing ability is at. From there I'm able to build lessons based on that evaluation.
The one thing I want out of my lessons is for the student to become passionate about the drums/music. I believe in the student taking their own pace as they progress through their lessons. I would like for my students to always be reaching for a goal, and having a plan on how they are going to achieve it. I want this to be challenging but fun. I want my students to look forward to having their drum lesson and then practicing later on! Motivation is a style of mine I use often and I believe if a student is motivated they can reach their potential.
