2010- Virginia Commonwealth Jazz Scholarship
I'm an extremely motivated and dedicated instructor that loves to share and advocate a fun and exciting musical discovery. In 2013, I graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a degree in Jazz Performance. Since becoming a musician at the age of eight, I've toured the country, played on recordings, and taught award winning groups and students.
My teaching experience started when I first graduated High School. I started teaching competitive marching drumlines at the age of 17 and have continued to do so to this day. During my sophmore year of college, I learned to play and teach piano and ever since have taught private lessons on Piano, as well as Percussion. Many of my students have studied with me from the time they enter middle school band, until they graduate from high school 7 years later. My experience has led me to learn that through creativity and self-exploration, music can be not only fun, but deeply rewarding and satisfying for both teacher and student.
For young students, typically I start with fundamental basics of playing. I introduce these commonly 'dull' aspects by casting an interesting light on them. By facilitating common, rudimentary, aspects of playing, it opens up the avenues for improvisation and creativity. Often I teach out of lesson books, typically Hal Leonard or some other popular publishers. For adults, usually I ask them what they're interested in and build a lesson plan that encourages self growth and discovery while catering to their desires. While I love to teach people what they want to learn, I also try and excite the student with new material they wouldn't of necessarily been exposed to otherwise. Many times, because every student is an individual, I will also hand-write exercises and concepts to be practiced that are individualistic to each student.
By teaching the student to teach themselves, I try and allow them to explore music and their own creativity as independently as possible. I emphasize the need to express oneself, as well as the need for introspection. The practice of music is a microcosm of life, and I try and instill that sense in each student. Each lessons will entail an improvisational aspect, as well as more standard study of key musical concepts. By keeping the student engaged with their own creativity, I am able to deliver better contextual education to each individual.
