Bachelors in Music Studies, University of Massachusetts Lowell and I'm working on my Masters in Music Teaching, University of Massachusetts Lowell
Overview:
I have a deep and passionate love for all things music, whether it's teaching, performing, writing, or listening, and I love being able to share that with my students. I did my undergrad program at UMass Lowell and have achieved my Bachelors degree in Music Studies. I currently still attend the University, where I am striving to get my Masters degree in Music Teaching. Outside of school I enjoy writing and recording my own music, and I occasionally play live shows when I can. I'm versatile when it comes to the number of instruments that I can play. This includes Guitar, Cello, Piano, Bass, and Drums, but the instruments I've had the most experience with are Guitar and Cello.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience began junior year of college when we started doing trial "lessons" in our classes and in the surrounding public schools of Lowell. Over that time I acquired specific techniques and methods that I have been able to apply to classroom settings and to individual students alike. Starting towards the end of my senior year I began doing private lessons on Guitar and hope to continue doing them for some time. Through my time working with students I have found that it is very important to get to know them on a more personal level, i.e. music they like, their interests, their hobbies etc, and that way I can tailor my lesson plans to them as individuals and make them feel as comfotable as possible. I've learned a lot from my experiences in and out of the classroom, and I use my knowledge to the best of my ability in every lesson.
METHODS USED
Depending on the level of the student and what they are looking to achieve through the lessons I would use a few different methods. I like to use guitar books if at all possible for beginners because its a great place to start. The fundamentals are where you have to start to build a scaffolding and practice books are great for doing this. I also like to use songs and tunes as a way of teaching different concepts. Whether its rock, pop, jazz, or others, there are various useful tools which can be extracted from playing songs.
LESSON STYLE
I always try to guide my instruction in a fun and engaging direction to keep the student interested and motivated to get better. I am able to do this by being energetic and enthusiastic about my teaching and I feel its important to make the material matter to the student. When a student has confidence in their abilities they are able to achieve much success on their specific instrument. As I also previously mentioned, getting to know what inspires a student and knowing them on a more personal level helps develop a better student/teacher relationship and thus yields a better outcome on the instrument.
