My studies at Mannes College of Music prepared me for a professional life in music. In my youth I played in rock bands and cocktail lounges. I also gave classical concerts at a local church. I am Music Director at the Kingsbury Baptist Church and my versatility keeps me in demand. I have taught all ages and students never have to study music that they don't like. There's so much piano literature to choose from and there's much to be learned from the Beatles and Garth as well as Beethoven and Bach. The study of music should be a pleasure and a joy. How can musicians bring pleasure and joy to others if they don't experience the beauty and the joy of the art themselves?
I have taught piano and organ for more than 20 years and I have seen music enhance the life of my students. The whole family gets involved when a child studies music and performs for relatives and friends bringing everyone closer together. I never ask students to play something without demonstrating it. I also encourage original work and help my students to express themselves with their own compositions and improvisations. Several of my students have gone on to conservatory and have made music their profession. I have taught adult students as well and have had the pleasure of seeing the joy they experience when music becomes a part of their life.
There are many fine primers and there isn't one primer that fits all students. Young children enjoy music like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Long Long Ago". Sometimes a simple Bach melody captures their attention. Adults have more eclectic tastes and they study what they enjoy. There is always a version that is within a student's grasp and I've seen the most diffident young students light up when they study Adelle or Radiohead. Students usually study with me for years and sharing my love of music and enthusiasm for the piano as well as a versatile musical repertoire maintains their interest.
In India music is taught by a master, and his protege is very much an apprentice. I consider my students as my apprentices. I am a musician and experiencing music through my eyes and the skills I demonstrate is something they take with them for the rest of their lives. I want my students to hear music well played and get involved with music, be it a rock concert or a recording of Vladimir Horowitz. They discover early their inclinations. Sometimes it's nursery rhymes and sometimes it's jazz or Broadway. It is surprising how young students are when they respond to different types of music. A young composer may want to compose the music themselves. All of which I enthusiastically encourage and share my love of music and the piano.
