Overview:
I have performed all over the globe for communities from San Francisco to New York to Ykaterinburg, Russia. My main instruments are bass, electric bass and French horn and have a background in all forms of improvised music as well as classical and orchestral repoertoire. My experience in the Air Force Band from 2006-2014 reinforced the skills necessary for professional musicianship that I cultivated at several fine music schools. Some famous venues I've played include Avery Fischer Hall, NY, and Shoreline Amphitheater, CA.
EXPERIENCE
I hope to emulate some of my great teachers including Robert Hurst, Cecil McBee, John Lockwood and others. Of course regular practice is necessary, but listening is also key to advancement. Besides regular warmups and technical workouts, I encourage every student to transcribe, sing and play along with music they like. My students will not only learn the ins and outs of their instruments, but also will learn to make their own music through improvising and composing.--Some of my experience includes almost a decade of national and international touring plus several years teaching ensembles and in classrooms at the university leve.
METHODS USED
Depending on a student's interests, I could start with several books like Rufus Reid's Evolving Bassist (for all-around bass playing). If reading skills are a main goal of a student's focus, I use repertoire from the standard canon and IMSLP. I feel that improvisation is an often overlooked key to self-expression and mastery of one's instrument, so I introduce concepts used in making up solos and some theory as soon as possible. A few other other technique methods I use especially on double bass are Fred Zimmerman's Contemporary Method of Bowing Technique and Ray Brown's bass method.
LESSON STYLE
One of the best things in life is playing music with other people. Unlike sports which eventually can wear your body down till you're unable to play anymore, music is something we can all take part in up through very old age! Whether a student wants to pursue a freelance career or just maintain a hobby that gives balance to their life I teach to their goals.--Some of my most productive lessons were those that I played (read or improvised) duets with my teachers. I emphasize playing over talking and demonstrating over explaining.
