BM, Temple University, Jazz/ Commercial music performance
Overview:
I am a successful instructor, drummer and musician who enjoys sharing knowledge and helping sudents acheive thier musical goals. I graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia with a Bachelor's degree in Jazz / Commercial music performance. After college I spent years honing my playing skills in all types of musical situations as well as teaching, and working as a recording engineer. I also spent 2 years studying at the Drummer's Collective in New York City where I worked with some of the best teachers in the country. I have had experience playing and teaching rock, jazz, funk, r&b, and blues as well as collegiate marching/ drumline and orchestral percussion ensemble experience. I even worked as percussionist in a pit orchestra for a theatre company. All of these experiences culminate in my ability and desire to teach drummers who want to learn more about their instrument.
EXPERIENCE
It did not take long after I first began playing drums in the 4th grade to realize that this was something that I wanted to center my life around. I had the good fortune to attend college for music as well as study at Drummers Collective. I started teaching just after college at several local music stores. I have worked with students of all ages and abilities teaching every style of music and playing imaginable. As a player I have had the opportunity to play with all kinds of ensembles and bands all over the country. Most recently I toured the East Coast and Mid West with a band called Matt Townsend and the Wonder of the World. From loud rock music, to the quietest jazz, orchestral percussion, theatre pit orchestra, or drumline, chances are if it is a type of playing you are interested in, I have experience playing and teaching it!
METHODS USED
During the first lesson I always assess where the student is the learning timeline with their instrument. I also find out what the student's goals are with music. Once this has been established we work on a plan of action to acheive those goals. Since the vast majority of drum students are primarily interested in learning drumset skills, we will start working on this from the very first lesson. I tend to break drumset studies into these general groups: skills and technique, independence and coordination, groove studies, and reading. For beginner students I usually work from the book Basic Drumming by Joel Rothman.
LESSON STYLE
I really enjoy helping drummers along the road to reaching their musical goals. I strive to get students motivated and inspired to overcome any challenges that learning the instrument might bring about. As someone who struggled early on in the learning process with playing drums, I fully understand that each student progresses at a different rate, and all lessons are tailored to the individual's learning process and the rate at which they are able to learn new material. Playing drums, or any musical instrument should first and formost be fun! I strive to keep fun in every lesson, even while teaching something difficult.
