Bachelor's of Music with an Emphasis in Jazz Studies from The University of Northern Colorado
Hi, I am a passionate instructor that plays guitar, piano, sings, and composes. In 2015, I received my Bachelor's of Music degree in Jazz Guitar Performance. In and out of school have performed in big bands, jazz combos, guitar ensembles, vocal jazz ensembles, and musicals. In addition, I have performed, recorded, and toured with an indie rock band for over 10 years. My varied experience enables me to help students with self-expression as well as technique and theory.
I have taught private guitar and piano lessons for the last four years. I really love sharing all I can with others to enable them to have a fun and fulfilling experience in learning music. An approach I favor with students is to help them learn songs that they pick and then use those songs as a springboard to teach skills such as technique, reading music, theory, and improvising. I always encourage students to write their own originals and to play for family and friends or any events. I enjoy teaching young children to older adults and all levels and styles.
I like to focus on songs that students are interested in. I also recommend certain books to be used as supplementary learning. For children guitarists I recommend Alfred's Kid's Guitar Course. For older guitarists I recommend Hal Leonard's Guitar Method. For children pianists I recommend Faber Piano Adventures.
I desire to bring out the musician in everbody. I believe that everyone can express themselves through music. I love seeing when my students interpret and make a song their own. I help my students create realistic goals and plans for achieving them. I celebrate each student's accomplishments and also challenge them to do the best they can. I tailor each lesson to my student's interests and needs.
